HOLY CARP!!!

Time has slowed down for 2.5 weeks for winter break, and I found myself back here. Iīm not sure when the last time I posted anything about my life was, so maybe I repeat myself, but here are a few general updates:

-I still work at the middle school in Maryland I started at right after I got back from Paraguay. I now teach French in addition to Spanish. Still kind of learning the French, but Iīm ahead enough of the kids so allīs well ;) Iīve been able to travel for work each summer (Costa Rica, Spain, France, Acadia, and backpacking the Appalachian Trail), and in general love what I do.
-My dog, Marta, is still awesome. She gets to go to school with me every Friday, and any time I go running she goes too.

hmmm, what else. Made my first tortilla espaņola today and it turned out awesome and I ate the whole thing. Excited to watch the newest season of Black Mirror. Currently reading The Fiddler in the Subway, by Gene Weingarten. Am going through some old TNCR threads and some not-old threads to see who is still around, and what has been happening around here lately. Seems like things are a little less contentious than they were the last time I was around, but maybe thatīs just the holiday season :)

Indeed. Yeah, it is a lot less contentious.

It's so good to hear from you!

I had no idea that you are a teacher. Last I remember was you got your dog after your stint in Paraguay. It's wonderful that you get to take her to school with you.

I hope you stop by more often.

That all sounds great...good to hear from you.

So.....any tips on how to get a dog to run with you with stopping to sniff, bark, piss, crap, chase, every 2 seconds?

CTP, my dog is usually like that in the beginning, but then gets into her rhythm after a bit. If the dog is motivated by hunt like mine is, maybe drop the word "deer!" here and there to get the dog moving. Works for Marta!

That is not my vision of Marta. I see her as being sweet to all creatures, frolicking with bunnies and kittens, protecting them.

Perhaps I have put Marta on too high a pedestal. :lol2:

Deer, she is fascinated with and she has kept up with them in chase, but I canīt imagine her actually wanting to take one down.

Squirrels are a close second, and I wouldnīt trust her to be kind if she caught one.

Her darkest moment was a few months ago when she sniffed out a baby bunny in the bushes one night, chased it down, and made it squeak like a toy. I never found it, and I marched her back inside in a rage and took a walk without her. Until then, I kind of had the same vision of her, as well. <_<

Be careful with the deer. If a dog hangs with them, they may run for miles.

If you can get her off of deer, sounds like she would make a good squirrel dog. A good squirrel dog is a valuable animal.

I learned that slowly over the first few weeks of her living in the States. She could run free in Paraguay and so I did that with her here at first. She took off chasing deer 3 or 4 times (and later came back after 20 or 30 minutes in the woods) before we had a scarier episode in which she ran through the woods and then crossed a busy street. She has incredible endurance (Iīve trained her into that), and yeah, she goes for miles!

My Gordon Setter Duke used to love to go after the deer out on the bike trail. He’d take off and come back in a few minutes to half an hour.
