HOLY CARP!!!
Tonight when I wanted to sit down for dinner I suddenly suffered acute back pain. I lay on the floor for 20min, unable to stand up. Now I’ve at least made it to my bed but it’s still hard to stand up.

Damn, getting old sucks.

I was cured when I stopped lifting heavy stuff. haven't had lower back pain in 15+ years since the last hauling of a couch or TV set. My limit now is a case of wine, which is worth the risk. :)

ice works best by the way and plenty of NSAIDs.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
I follow the same plan as Davis, and also have a top of the line Tempurpedic bed. Never have back problems anymore.

low back strains are a result of weak abdominals. put some crunches into your life.

Sorry, Klaus.
Ice. Then see a Doc. Then pain killers, referral to a neurosurgeon, and then...have your insurance deny most every step along the way because they enjoy being The Boss of Physicians.

Snark aside, hope you start feeling better soon. I'd still recommend going to your family physician.
And ice. And scotch.

Actually my family physician (wife) recommends hot water bags, not ice :lol2:

Scotch sounds like a good idea, though.

Sometimes - but can also be related to spinal curvature or other issues. Hang in there, Klaus. I've paid my dues in the back pain club. It helps to know the cause before finding a therapeutic intervention.

I’m a couch potato hence there’s probably a lot of truth in that.

Most back pain resolves naturally, in Germanyyou can probably see a doctor for free so what the hell. In the US seeing a doc or not for lower back pain usually has no impact on outcome or quality of life.

Maybe Rainman was suggesting the ice for the scotch rather than Klaus' back.

And on the free medical....He's married to a doc; hopefully he gets the courtesy rate.

Let us begin anew, remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness.

Nothing is worse for your back than spending hours in a chair. D4, who has had 3 (!) back operations, has her back up when she spends too much time at work sitting.

Strengthening the core is good, and will help keep your spine more aligned. But, if there's a deformity (as Kluurs mentions, and as I have), it's harder to deal with.

Yeah, NSAIDS, heat, cold (alternating) are all good.

Most back pain is caused by muscle spasm, and that can be debilitating. Fortunately, it's usually self-limited. Even a herniated disc will resolve on its own, most of the time. You need to be patient, and expect a course of several weeks before seeing progress - at least that's my history.

Yep, that’s me. Sitting all day at a desk, or at the piano.

Maybe I should get one of those desks where one can work while standing.

Sitting at the piano is good. Presumably your posture is good when you do that. Perhaps consider a stool, or something like that, for work which will encourage good posture.

I've also heard great things about standing desks.

At my desk I use a simple straight wooden chair, no arm rests, this seemed to have helped clear up neck and back problems years ago.

Of course there are alternatives:

Klaus, I got a FitBit watch-thingy for Xmas.
Not sure how it works yet, but my hope is that all I have to do is wear it, and I get healthy, fit, and lose weight. I think it also cures back ailments.

Your wife is an M.D.? hmmmm. That may not be so good. My wife is an R.N., and I don't get nearly the sympathy I deserve.

Been there, got the tshirt.

Ice at first, then introduce alternating heat and ice after the first day or so.

Back injuries are no fun. It does get a little aggravating when you can't pick your leg up enough to depress the clutch when shifting....

Do everything it tells you to do.

I have lost a pound a week, each week, since I got it, over 20 pounds lost now.

If you are not bleeding nor have a fever (over 100) it's likely a mental health issue, right?
