How does it work if I am driving a rental car i.e., a tourist driving around the city for days?

The rental car will often include an EZ pass, if it doesn't, they'll get billed via the mail and will then charge your credit card after the fact along with their rather large and obnoxious convenience fee.

Ask me how I know. :silly:

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

So, let me get this straight.

If I am visiting DC as a tourist, I would come across a toll booth and would be forced to pay $34.50?

I thought the sign posted at the beginning of this thread was like we have around here, which shows approximate time to reach certain other freeways or a portion of the city.
We have no tolls here in the wild west.
Oh, I guess there is one: Bridge of the Gods across the Columbia River. It is $1. I guess gods don't need more than 1 $.

Oh no, no toll booth. Instead, you have to spend $35 for an EZ Pass Flex. Then you would be automatically docked the amount of the toll. Or, if tou went down the road without an EZ Pass, they will capture your plate, and charge you the max toll, plus an administrative fee.

Or, you could spwnd an additional hour to drive in on another route.
OK, thanks for the clarification.

The interesting thing is that there is no toll if you have a passenger. Also, the toll is time and direction dependant. It runs from 5:30-9:30 AM (I believe) if you are driving into DC. If you drive in at 10:30, there is no toll. The toll is in effect for outbound traffic from 3-7.

Virginia authorities have stated that the purpose is to get fewer vehicles driving into DC and encourage them to use public transportation. Why should VA authorities give a flying fvck about traffic in DC and want to promote DC based transportation companies?
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

You rent the EZ Pass with the car.

Or you can bring your EZ Pass with you from home.

Seems like that should put an upper bound on the toll. I would think that for less than $40 you'd get indigent guys lining up on the expressway to be your passenger. They could buy a bottle of thunderbird, spend the day in DC, then do the same thing on the way out in the afternoon.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Just pull up to the parking lot full of vagrants at the Vienna Metro, roll down the window, and yell "What's the word?" If one yells back "Thunderbird!", then you are in business.

Markets in everything.

I'm reminded of something that happened years ago in Chicago. If you got a ticket and wanted to reduce the fine and points, you could take this class offered by the state. I signed up for it one Saturday, and took a cab there, some place on the northside. The cabbie recognized the destination and asked if I had traffic school. He tells me that across the street is a bar where some drunks hang out that will take your course for $20. You have to hang out in the bar and wait for them, though, because of course you pay them afterwards. Still, hanging out in some bar for two hours is better than sitting through the course.

Someone I might know might have taken an online course for his alleged spouse when she got a ticket for doing 82 in a 60 zone. S/he got out of the ticket that way.

Also, the toll is time and direction dependant.

Friday I was headed south on 95 near Quantico.

I could see traffic ahead on Google so I took the Express lane.

When we got down to the SR-610 the electronic sign said to get off at the next exit because of heavy traffic.

It cost $18+ for a few minutes on the stupid express lane. They charge by traffic volume and speed, if there are a lot of slow cars they raise the toll to try to keep traffic away.

Today on the way home I noticed that same toll headed south was $21+, the traffic headed south was even worse.

I95 was bad on Friday a 3 hour ride headed south turned into about 4.5 hours.

Today it was even worse, it took us 6 hours to get home. And Waze kept it from being even worse by telling us to get off I95 in Doswell and drive through Ladysmith and several other small towns for 20 miles so we avoided a big accident.

I95 really needs a major boost in capacity.

The adjustable tolls really aren't about revenue. They are more about social engineering. The VA government has come out and said so directly.

It's a private company that manages the tolls in the state. I am not sure of the exact arrangements, but I believe it is a flat rate that they pay the state under the contract.

I love congestion pricing. Even at age 18 if I couldn’t find a parking spot I’d curse the fact that a scarce resource was underpriced. All shortages are policy driven.

Yup. Of course the best value is to plan ahead and not go when everyone else does. I know that some people have no choice. I know this because I never go in prime time traffic, haven't ever. Sure I've been caught but it's not that hard to avoid.

Great idea, ride your bike 180 miles in freezing fog carrying a dozen bags full of Christmas presents and a few suitcases.
