My son's learning the bass. I found this video to inspire him. Who knew just how cool the bass could be?

In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

"Yeah, he does this shit all the time" is what I'm sure he'd say.

Very cool, though.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

In fairness, he wasn't impressed the first time, either.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

It's impressive, and I like it.

I also wonder if the same piece can be more easily performed on a (electric) base guitar.

Nice! Did he already start taking lessons? Does he have a rental instrument or did you buy? Are there smaller instruments for kids?

They have a weekly lesson at school, small group. (He and 3 other bass players). We're renting for the moment, they recommend that if for no other reason than they grow into larger instruments.

His is roughly a 1/2 size body and a 1/4 size scale. But I've learned bass sizing is highly inexact. Also to say 1/2 size is misleading. 4/4s are rare, the vast majority of basses you've seen are 3/4 size. And a 1/2 size is only a few inches shorter than a 3/4. Check out this sizing chart.

Very nice. Does he learn with a bow or does he go straight for jazz and only plucks?

It’s orchestra, so they’ll do bow. But he’s only on week 4 so they haven’t introduced the bow yet.

Ah, what do they start with, then?

My daughter has started with the violin and is also around week 4. Almost all they did so far was about using the bow, especially how to hold it. Using the fingers on the strings starts much later.

I assume it's a good thing to start learning the bow, too. Then he has all possibilities later on.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Both things here are most excellent.

I can't believe Boy NYC is old enough to play an instrument. In the wink of an eye..

That's next month's thread. After that, it will be about buying him a car.

Excellent idea. Then Jon can inherit another Corolla from his son in a few years. He'll be ready for one by then. :lol2:

A couple of months in, how's son-nyc doing with the double bass? Is it hard to motivate him to practice?

He’s doing ok. He has mostly worked on pizzicato playing this year. They didn’t really pick up the bow until January. He switched out his French-style bow for a German-style which is easier to hold.

He’s also taking his 4th guitar lesson today.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Lessons... heh.

Here's what he needs to know. With these three chords, he'll be a country music star in no time. The girls will be throwing their training bras at him, left and right. :whome:
