This is a term I hadn't heard until a few weeks ago. "Bend the knee." Yes. "Take a knee?" Nope. |

I seem to have redd the phrase a lot in historical fiction in the era of knights and tournaments and ladies fair and like that. Lancelot takes a knee before his king. |

I think the intent is disrespect. I think the action is clueless. |
|
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

The intent has never been to disrespect the military or veterans. They specifically changed the protest from sitting to taking a knee to show respect to our military and veterans. They made the switch and chose to genuflect based on the suggestions of several veterans and veterans groups. https://undertheradar.military.com/2016/09/kaepernick-meets-veteran-nate-boyer-kneels-anthem/ As for clueless, they've put a lot more thought and research into this than everybody that's just responding in anger and ignorance. While some Vets are feeling disrespected, there's a hell of a lot of others that our fully supportive of these players. |

I think the flag belongs to every citizen of the country, not just veterans. The rules of behavior are pretty specific and you can't get a special dispensation from veterans. |

Take a knee before the anthem and then stand up for the anthem serves both tribes. Perfectly good answer, but each side is going to fight to the death on this one. No justice, no peace- whoever started that chant didn't realize how it would be co-opted by the other side. You see you don't get to strike with impunity. Surprise, surprise. |

You know, I thought the same when I saw Dallas do it Monday night. They were still booed. (During the anthem, and while the players were standing! Who was showing a lack of respect, there?) |

Well like me they don't want politics desecrating the sport. But guess what, the players are who they are and fans, like me, have to get used to it. Musicians and actors act out all the time, at least if it's controlled, perhaps people can move on. The fans do ultimately pay the athlete's salary, so some caution is advised. Maybe the NFL should just ask the fans if they want the national anthem played anymore. |

It strikes me that the fans who apparently worry more about whether the players kneel, in what to me at least looked a respectful way, than they do about the same players receiving serious brain injuries while entertaining these same fans, should maybe take a few moments to examine their priorities. IOW, they won't stop watching football because people are getting serious brain injuries and in some cases dying, but by God if these guys dare to express an opinion they don't like, then they can go hang? |

No, the owners looked around, saw that they were on the wrong side of almost 70% of America, and since the NFL fanbase is typically over 40 and white, were doing even worse among their fan base. Now, we ain't talkin' millions, we're talking billions of dollars of possible lost revenue. Since it is written into the NFL/NFLPA contract about player conduct for the anthem, the players were breaking that section of their contract. Now, you're just running your head, but the fact is money talks and BS walks. I know guys who played in the NFL that would give their eyeteeth to make what players make today. I also know guys who would just about kill to play in the NFL, if they could make a team. The league isn't going to jettison their stars, but they might cut any problem children with lesser talent. There's ten waiting in line for every guy cut. The owners did their obligatory we're with you! stuff with the players last week, to show they were somewhat concerned and to help promote team unity. But that will not continue in the face of falling ratings, empty stadium seats and declining paraphernalia sales. |

One incident is trying to influence the Redskins to change their name because of the tyranny of the PC minority. The other addresses people disrespecting the flag through protest. I fail to see the confluence. |

Please cite where the player's responsibility during the anthem is written into the CBA, because everything that I've read and heard states otherwise. Beyond that, the only teams that have said they will not be protesting this week are the teams that never protested before last week. They are going back to their status quo, until Drump ****s it up again. |

I don't doubt it. Personally, I don't see the disrespect in kneeling. I watched the players take a knee and it didn't look disrespectful to me at all. In addition, the action isn't about the flag, it's about the perception that some people have that black people in this country are getting a sh!tty deal. I can't say much about the truth of that, as to be honest it's really outside my own experience, unlike pretty much everybody else posting here who appears to know a lot more than I do about what it's like to be black in this country. Neither president should be interfering in this issue as far as the football is concerned. |

There was a facebook post making the rounds that said behavior during the anthem was in the NFL Rules Book. I can't find it. http://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2017-nfl-rulebook/ http://www.indystar.com/story/news/2017/09/25/what-nfl-rule-book-actually-says-national-anthem/699886001/ However,
