"In a single afternoon, a young songwriter named Jimmy Webb wrote a song about loneliness he titled 'Wichita Lineman.'

"A simple tale of a lonely telephone repairman working in the vast open plains of the American Midwest, 'Wichita Lineman' is one of the most perfectly realized pop songs of all time.

"Although the song is set on the Kansas-Oklahoma border, Webb actually wrote it at a grand piano in Hollywood."

Webb goes on to describe in a very poignant and poetic way the image he recalled from an earlier time that inspired the song. Plus there's a painting by Edward Hopper that seems to evoke it perfectly.

"I shall now begin to speak of purple, which exceeds all the colors that have so far been mentioned both in costliness and in the superiority of its delightful effect." -- Vitruvius, De architectura, 1st century BC.

Thanks for that link, Cats. A great read.

I never cared for the song when I was young. Now, I get it.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

There is an interview done with Webb and Campbell a few years before Glen died. I heard it on satellite radio, over at Willie's Roadhouse. What has been downplayed is the difference in how the song was written and how Campbell cut it. Glen had Jimmy play the song as he had written it, and what Jimmy played sounded more lush and romantic on the piano. Campbell then proceeds to do the song with the electric guitar and his style of picking.

The end result is a more raw and lonesome piece than even Webb had done.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Webb was awesome. NPR had a very extensive interview with him. Heard it in 2010 driving back from Ann Arbor.
