Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Discovery.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

If that is their plan it will fail. I don't want to see it that badly.

People of Earth cost me $20 just so I could let my daughter finish season 1. They dropped it from the website after she watched episode 6. I had already watched season 1 but I paid anyway. :veryangry: It is a great show so I paid up. :silly:

I found "Discovery" to be a bit of a bore. The unnecessary introduction in the desert did nothing to establish the characters' relationships, and even that was wasted when you see what happened to the captain.

The whole Klingon thing was a hot mess, and the "if we don't shoot first" thing was a cheap plot point to get some CGI in.

It was remarkably politically correct. Asian women, black women, albino Klingons. The only human males of any consequence were those in the court-martial - and they were menacingly back-lit.

Very preachy as well.

CGI was perhaps *too* CGI-ish.

Two stars out of four.

Will I watch it? Yeah, only if there's nothing better on, or if I have nothing more important to do (like rearranging my sock drawer).

Edit to add: The opening titles are beautiful, and very non Trek-ey. But a full minute and a half of them in a show that is 42 minutes long? C'mon, man.

If there's one moment in the two episodes that gives me pause, it's the death of Yeoh's character near the end of "The Battle of the Binary Stars." It's a development that's obviously telegraphed from light years away, but one that is still problematic for a couple of reasons. First, killing one's mentor to drive the story of a lead character is a trope that pop culture would be wise to drop altogether. But in this case, it's also poor optics to kill off an Asian actress portraying a high-profile character within the first two hours of the series.

According to the most recent Boxed In study conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film at San Diego State University, Asian women made up just 6 percent of all female speaking roles across all platforms in 2016-2017. Now, Star Trek has a history of inclusivity, with the original series featuring a black woman and an Asian man in prominent roles that existed outside the stereotypes of the era, but if this is the last we see of Yeoh, a talented and accomplished actress admired for her work across the globe, it will be a low moment for a franchise that otherwise prides itself on being inclusive. There is every chance, though, that we'll see more of her as the series progresses; the premiere was rather reliant on flashbacks, so it's entirely possible this isn't the end of Captain Philippa Georgiou.

Where does someone learn to talk like this?

That is really sick.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Yeah, the Klingons were the worst ever. We have had a view of them that has held since 1986. Discovery's Klingons were cartoonishly overdone. I'll watch it if it is free. If not it can go. Hated the science
bunny officer.
