Just ordered a new torque wrench

It's always fun to get a new tool.

The head gasket on the lawn mower blew and I need the wrench to install the new kit.

I was trying to decide between a few different wrenches when Amazon popped up and said "Order within 10 minutes to receive it today".

I couldn't resist wanting to see if they would really deliver it today.

We'll see.

Did you pay extra for same-day delivery? Usually it's about $4-5 in my area.

The offer was free same-day if I spent $35.

The new gasket kit was about $15. I was debating whether I needed a new wrench but when I saw it put me over $35 I couldn't resist, I wanted to see same-day shipping.

I suspect the lawnmower has a different set of questions.

So Copper, I'd be curious.
When you think of what it all costs, do you think Amazon (or the merchant you purchased from via Amazon) made a profit or what seems more likely, how much of a loss?

And, how/why did your lawn mower blow a head gasket? I've never had that happen. Thrown a rod through the crankcase before on a rototiller, but never a head gasket.

I have no idea of the cost structure, but the gaskets were made in China and the wrench in Taiwan, I assume those locations keep the prices down.

The gaskets go into a 2004 Sears lawn tractor with a BRIGGS & STRATTON ENGINE-MODEL NUMBER 31P777 which is apparently famous for blowing head gaskets. I haven't opened it yet but it has the symptoms.

There are several You Tube videos that show how to perform this operation and the head gasket seems to blow in the same place on each. Based on a few days of googling I believe there is a place on the gasket that is, very slightly, not as snug as the rest of the gasket and that is where the blow-through occurs.

The head bolts look something like this:

5,,,2,,,4
8
6
,,3,,,1,,,7

And the blow-through occurs over there on the right between the 4 and 7, I believe that now the updated model has an extra head bolt near that position.

I enjoy a couple of those car shows, like the GasMonkey Garage and similar.

What I notice is these experts build a car and make it look all nice and expensive. But, it's rare I see them use a torque wrench. And, I've never seen them take one of their projects, and blast it with a hose or pressure washer to see if any of the seals leak. I've also never seen them lube bushings before assembly, never seen them use a seal when installing a quarter panel.

Good on you for using a torque wrench. I always do, whenever there are specs available. And for a head gasket, there is no way anyone would replace it by guessing, except for those that would just like to get it running to sell to the next sucker person.

Regarding the Amazon same day delivery: it is because of the trade agreements with China and other SE Asian countries plus special considerations with our government, that they can store their products at Amazon warehouses, and have their respective governments subsidize the freight costs (along with Amazon cutting a deal with the USPS for Sunday delivery).

If you wanted to be a jerk, you could also exercise your option as an unhappy customer, and send the wrench back after you complete your project. The merchant might even be required to send you a UPS call tag, as well as refund the entire purchase.
Amazon Suks for small businesses.

OK, had to get my Amazon slam in there someplace, even if not relevant. Good luck on the B&S, a good project and maybe even a bit fun!

I don't have the tools or experience for that, at least not yet.

Easier to just put a new $15 gasket in there every few years.
