HOLY CARP!!!
I have never owned a smartphone. I have a cell phone that I pay $10 a month for 500 text messages, not sure how many minutes of talking, but then I hardly ever do that, and voice mail. I'm quite happy with that. I sit at a computer at work, and far too often at home, so I just don't have a blazing desire to be connected to a device the rest of the time. So I've not jumped on the bandwagon, yet.

However, I'm getting more and more impressed with the photos people are taking with their phones, and I'm thinking I'd really love to have something that I'd always have with me. So. The appeal of the camera has me thinking it may be time to join in the current century. I often lug my dslr around with me, just for random photo ops, and of course I always have my cell. A single, small, piece of equipment really makes more sense. You folks have probably already figured that out.

I likely am being unrealistic, but my wish list includes the best camera available (ability to shoot RAW is important), but nothing fancy with the rest of the phone; something fairly basic is all I want. Is there such a thing?

the samsung galaxy s7 has the camera features I want, but it's more phone than I need.

I'm just starting my research, but figured asking you guys for opinions/suggestions would be really valuable.

thanks in advance for any insight :)

You will get good pictures, but I don't think there is a cell phone that go head to head with a DSLR camera.

My son is biased, but he would say apple. Just be prepared to pay for it.

You'll find that you use the camera for other things.

Before I pull the carburetor off my lawn motor I take several pictures that I can use to help put it back together.

I take pictures of gate hardware before I go to Lowe's to buy a replacement and I'll put a tape measure in the picture.

You can take a picture of where you parked so you can find your car.

And the GPS-aided driving directions make trips to unfamiliar places a lot easier.

Year after year, the iPhine has one of the best cameras on the market.
I have a few friends who are professional photographers, and each of them carries an iPhone around for day to day shots.
Their new(ish) portrait feature is really cool if you do up close shots and want depth of field, and their inage capture devices are top notch.

With the new iPhones 8 and X hitting stores soon, the 6 and 7 models will be on sale - and the 7 has a great 2-lens system that allows for better tele shots without the software doing the magnification.
Obviously the types of lenses and configurations available in a dslr are no comparison - but phones these days take some great shots.

Now, here's the rest of the equation...how much will you use the other features of the phone and what type of cell phone plan is necessary?

I'm not a huge cell user and I don't take many pictures. I get by with a cheaper plan (Straight Talk $45) and a cheaper phone. But even with my cheap LG, I still use the phone for several functions.

1. Like copper said, infopictures. Great when you are taking something apart or need instant access to a photo for something.
2. Schedule. My schedule is all on my phone with reminder alerts.
3. Texts. I prefer to talk (I'm old fashioned) but texts are handy.
4. Amusement. When sitting in a doctor's office or waiting for something, I check the news, TNCR or read a book on my phone.
5. Google Maps. Or some such. Invaluable in finding places. With driving directions and ETA's.
6. Business. With younger folks, the phone is how business IS DONE.

When I walk out of the house in the morning, I'll have a pocketknife, a handgun, cash & cards, ID and a smartphone. Yep, they've gotten that important.

Why not take a high quality compact camera with you? Something like the Sony RX100 will dance circles around every smartphone camera. You can shoot in low light, you have full manual controls, fast and flexible autofocus, you can zoom, and you have a sensor that is orders of magnitude larger than that of a smartphone. If your DSLR with a standard zoom lens is at 10 and a smartphone camera is at 1, then the RX100 is at 8.

I have an RX100 (not the latest version). It doesn't fit well into a trouser packet, but it fits very easily into a coat pocket. These days, I use it more than my Fuji X-T1, where each lens costs more than that compact camera has cost.

 This is what I really want, but kept going in circles, thinking I should put the money towards a smartphone, because I really should get with the program. Can't afford the camera and a really good smartphone.

But, a camera like the Sony (love that small size!) and just a half-assed older smartphone.....maybe that's a custom solution; more suited to my wish list.

Thanks Klaus. Food for thought indeed.

The older versions of the RX100 are almost just as good as the current one with regard to taking pictures (who needs 4K video?). They aren't that expensive anymore.

Google Pixel is probably your best bet. Great camera, great phone - shoots RAW.

Now the newer iPhones are fantastic and >iOS 10 allows RAW shooting - BUT apple optimize the SW and camera HW to work together to a greater degree than Android phones (which need to support all flavors / manufacturers of android phones.

So - you’ll probably have a tougher time getting the post-processing to exceed the quality of ios’s Native processing.

Bottom line - pixel is a fantabulous smartphone camera.

iPhone 7 Plus is what I have and it has the fancy double camera someone mentioned above. And as they mentioned will be much cheaper soon once the 8 and X come out and make the 7’s obsolete. :P

Also a smartphone is also a GPS, a flashlight, a debit and credit card, helps you carry around less stuff.

Finally
I just discovered that, indeed, since iOS 10, iPhones can shoot RAW, but only with 3rd party camera apps (like Camera+, which is free). I'll have to investigate....
