http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/09/20/after-trump-speech-mattis-says-north-korea-crisis-still-diplomatic-effort/

This from the Foreign Policy newsletter:

"Defense Secretary James Mattis [says] that Washington is still looking for a diplomatic solution.

"It is still a diplomatically-led effort," Mattis said, highlighting sanctions recently put in place by the U.N. Security Council, as well as the efforts of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. But Mattis also echoed other senior administration officials who have underscored military options to deal with Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear tests.

"At this time we must also recognize the somber reality that military options must be available in order to protect our allies and ourselves," said Mattis, who spoke at an annual Air Force conference near Washington. He also stressed the :rightarrow: importance of global alliances: "Nations with allies thrive, and those without allies decline," he said.
------

And not for nuttin', there's a photo there that shows Mattis smiling. Two things: 1) We gain insight on the birth of the nickname 'Mad Dog', and 2) If he ever smiled at you like that as your commanding officer, you would be permanently shriveled, if you get my drift.

if it's true that we -- 'we' being the West and maybe China -- have something Kim wants, then Kim can be had.

What he wants is to kill everyone in America.

That would leave very few people to carry on in tncr.

What he wants is to use the threat of nuclear attack to keep outsiders from undermining his regime. Is that something we want to help him with?

Nahhhh.

I don't know, Copper.

Seems to me he does not necessarily want to kill everyone in America.

He wants it to appear that he could, if, and only IF, he wanted to.

OK, so not everyone in America, just all Americans.

Tyrant Kim Jong-Un has used the anniversary of the Korean War to issue a chilling threat to kill all Americans.

He doesn't need nukes for that.

He could just hand a box cutter to everyone that crosses our southern border and tell them to get to work.

What you heard was an historic speech of epic proportion. You heard what it sounds like when a real leader speaks. Everyone is so accustomed to hearing weakneed pussymen do apology tours and other so called leaders with their heads up their ass that a lot of people don't recognize true leadership.

Did you guys all have abusive fathers, or horrible bosses at some point that you think a “strong” leader is literally someone who’s strong with their fists?

“You’ll be sorry” is the kind of **** someone says who’s never been punched in the face, or has never punched someone in the face.
Trump doesn’t come off as a strong leader, he comes off as someone completely ignorant of reason and observation - offering only emotional, aggressive responses to anything he doesn’t like, from the press to leaders of other nations.

offering only emotional, aggressive responses to anything he doesn’t like, from the press to leaders of other nations.

Only is a little strong.

And emotional is a little melodramatic.

And aggressive is a little hostile.

Just because you don't like it is no reason to become abusive.

He was hired to defend the USA, that is the job. He is trying to do that.

Although occasionally impolite, I think it is a nice change to have a president who is at least trying to earn his pay.

Of course Kim would not be conducting such tests if not for Trump's antics. In fact he probably was just getting ready to negotiate and had come to his senses when Trump snatched defeat from the jaws of victory...because the last eight years had finally taken their toll on him.

Coupla conventional weapons on the palace and a few more on the factory. Maybe three from Japan and a few more from S. Korea. Pay China to look the other way.

Nukes are overkill.

And thank God the President isn’t, either.

I’m glad we have seasoned pros who are in the know (presumably) making the decisions that matter day to day.

Haven't you heard? Trump has his hands on the Big Red Button. Aren't you conscience-bound to be terrified and outraged right now? For the children?
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Nah - fear’s not the path for me.

It's true there's no percentage in it. But I can't remain quite sanguine, either.

I believe the best hope is as KB said earlier -- hope Trump has the brains to leave the final decision in the hands of those competent to make and implement it, like Maddis. And hope Kim has his useful advisors also.

Here's an article that usefully lays out what the writer thinks is Kim's rationale.

Fear has nothing to do with it. I am totally confident that if necessary I could make you piss your pants and run screaming for mamma. It's called common sense, and I'm not seeing much of that coming out of you or Steve either on this issue.

The man just detonated a hydrogen bomb 7 times bigger than the ones we dropped on Japan. He just shot a missile straight across Japan, during a test to see if he could control the damn missile. You just don't shoot missiles across another country. Now he's planning to detonate an even larger hydrogen bomb out in the pacific ocean. The fallout from this could kill untold numbers of people. Yet Steve thinks it's "overblown", and I can't even figure out what you think, because you're all over the map - but it's clear you think we should just ignore it.

Ax, I don't have to question what he would do, because scripture makes it quite clear what he would do. He would tell you to solve the problem yourself, because he didn't come to settle our conflicts, he came to settle your eternity.

I am also pretty sure he wouldn't be very pleased about my using his name in vain when i find myself confronted with abject stupidity, but he would forgive me for it and tell me I need to learn how to be more patient with fools.
