Trump UN Speech

I will watch some if not all of his speech when I get the chance. Makes it more interesting to compare what he said, to what the talking heads say he said, or their interpretation of what he really meant as opposed to what he actually said, and then of course what he should have said, or should have not said.

Anyone watch it live?
If not, well, here it is folks, LIVE FROM NEW YORK! (rebroadcast for your convenience):

What do ya figure - How many countries/state leaders did he piss off this time? Diplomacy is not a word that springs to mind listening to that. Although I confess to not making it through the whole speech. A person can only take so much.

I thought the "rocket man" appellation was inappropriate.

But this:
Quote:

“It is pointless for North Korea to try to develop nuclear weapons because if they ever use them it would be the end of their country.’”

And this:
Quote:

"We actually drew up plans to attack North Korea and to destroy their reactors and we told them we would attack unless they ended their nuclear program."

Yes, deadbeats tend to get upset when you ask them to fulfill their commitments.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

His job is not to be a diplomat. His job is to be a leader. Who gives a rat's ass if he pissed off some pissant leader - if what he said pissed them off, they needed to be pissed off.

What you heard was an historic speech of epic proportion. You heard what it sounds like when a real leader speaks. Everyone is so accustomed to hearing weakneed pussymen do apology tours and other so called leaders with their heads up their ass that a lot of people don't recognize true leadership.

I do recognize it. And i saw it from beginning to end in that epic speech.

It's interesting to compare CNN's banner quotes, which were always present at the bottom of the screen, and usually (faithfully) out of context.

Overall, I think it was undoubtedly a shocking speech to many in the room. Not the previously admired Obama, that's for sure.

I did note him mentioning how 10 refugees could be supported in a cost/effective means in the middle east, compared to the same cost for supporting one refugee in the U.S. I heard it was 12:1, but 10:1 is OK. If that is a fact, that is - or made up. I'm sure the talking heads will fact check and then likely ignore it if true.

Some very good, powerful statements. A bit rambling, almost like he wrote some of it.

At any rate, all those attending will have something to talk about tonight at their respective champagne and caviar receptions.

That speech bordered on the thread of committing a war crime.

cnn liked the "Trump wants to commit a war crime" spin earlier today.

How can you even answer an idiot like that?

Based on the Reuters coverage, the speech has my cautious approval. 'Cautious' because I don't believe it's a good idea to talk about annihilation. America First is all well and good, but maybe a little discretion?

OTOH, you could argue that Kim isn't taking American annoyance seriously, and what better way to get it across than doing so unambiguously in front of the UN?

I wonder what Japan and China are thinking, and if they intend to divulge that.

ETA: And Russia.

Oh yes. There are very clear advantages for them. Like us, it's not about using them but that we could.

McNamara has always said that deescalation from conflict must come out of empathy for the other side. If we care about saving American lives, we've got to at least know and respect what the enemy wants.

Our failure to do this in Vietnam led to, well, exactly what happened.

My worry with Trump is that he is completely incapable of empathy in this regard.

Of course he has to know what the enemy wants, there is no need for him to respect it, especially when what they want is to kill everyone in this country.

1) Well, he wasn't the guy in the chair.
2) Ad hominem. What he said about empathy is either right or not, regardless of his own track record. And I think he is.

Eh, what good is hindsight when you're always blind in the present anyway? That's why I think we never learn from our mistakes, and hindsight never saves us.

I do think his word of caution has merit, though, if we care more about living on the planet than we do about showing how fucking awesome we are and blowing shit up.
