Does anyone remember Phlebas? From his daughter...

Hey everyone,

First time posting here, so please be patient if I make any TNCR 'faux pas' or the like.

I knew this forum mostly through the lens of my dad. He was known here as "Phlebas" here and was an avid member of this community until 2010, when he suddenly passed away.

Today is the 7th anniversary of his death. I was searching his name and came across a post where JonNYC and George K briefly paid tribute to him.

Does anyone else remember him? I know that the chance of that is very small since it's been 7 years, but I can't help but wonder. Do you miss him at all? Do you have any stories to share?

Whenever I miss him (which is quite often, I'm afraid. He had such a unique personality that I still keep close to my heart) I always look at this video of him when he played Chopin's Etude in A Flat Major, Op. 25 No. 1. I remember being there and meeting some of you on that day. You were all so wonderful and so welcoming. I am happy to know that my dad was surrounded by good, genuine people up until he died.

Hope all are well. Thank you for reading.

Yes, your dad was an important part of this forum. He was so smart, funny, and very genuine. I liked him a lot, and I understand very well that you must still miss him terribly.

Others here knew him even more than I did, and they will tell you that they appreciated your dad, too.

Thank you for returning to the forum with your questions, and always know you are welcome here, just as your dad was.

Yes, he is missed.

Yes, we remember well your dad. He and I often crossed swords, but at times also had meaningful rapport.

You can search his threads if you want -- just enter his name in the searchbox above -- if you want some insights into him and his participation in this little community.

I will remember him in my prayers.

Welcome Phlebas 2. I hope you stay awhile.

Of course we remember your father. And yes, we miss him too. I probably shouldn't speak for everyone, but those of us who were around then won't disagree with me.

I never met him in person, but I always read his posts here in TNCR. I didn't do that with everyone; that how special your dad was.

How long have I been reading Phlebas posts? Twelve, maybe fourteen years ago, starting at PW.

Funny what you remember...Some of the guys here would get all fired up about the World Cup soccer games and he was one of the bunch that knew who was who and what was going on.

Really enjoyed his piano, too. And didn't mind helping others ...Lot of his stuff over at the Piano World forum, I'm sure.

Smart guy. Wish he was still around...

It's a pleasure to see you here, Phlebas2 - and wonderful to meet you!

Your father, as has been said, was a pillar of this forum, and an important part of the community here. Like Jolly, I remember him going back to the original pianoforum where we all kind of met initially.

He's very fondly remembered, often thought of and missed, and we're very happy to have you here to share those memories with us.

Of course we remember your father. It was a sad day when we lost him.

Glad you came by, and don't worry much about rules or etiquette. There aren't any!

+1. He was a great guy and would talk with pretty much anybody. That's what I remember, aside from his piano-playing.

Glad you stopped by, Phlebas2, and hope you stick around.

Oh yes. Everyone here remembers him except those who joined too late.

I have many memories of your father - and even some of you! You might not remember this but we had lunch once right before a matinee concert at Carnegie. You were with your dad, I was with a piano buddy named Andre who doesn't post here. Your dad and I had discovered a few days in advance that we had tickets for the same concert, so we met up beforehand.

Your father was well liked and respected here. He had encyclopedic knowledge of the piano repertoire and shared it generously. I remember he actually came up with a list ranking all 32 Beethoven Sonatas by order of difficulty. All 32! I still have the list and have referenced it on more than one occasion.

He was such a lover of music. I remember a piano party we had in 2007. I have two very specific memories of your dad at that party. He came a bit late, and had missed my playing of Schumann's Symphonic Etudes (about half of them anyway). He asked me if I had played one in particular, of which he hummed the first couple of bars. When I said yes, he practically dragged me to the piano and asked me to play it again.

Then it was his turn to play - I was hosting that party, and I think it was his first time at my place (in Brooklyn). He told me he worked up a Ravel piece, knowing I was something of a Ravel fanatic. He sat down and played (IIRC) Noctuelles from the Miroirs suite. No easy task!

Here's a picture of him playing it, with me watching attentively:

Another thing to mention. You were the apple of his eye. He mentioned you quite a bit here. Always concerned about your safety and well being, I remember him talking about internet safety concerns and such (you were about that age). I also remember his discussing his move from Queens to Westchester. I wish he would have been around for advice when I made a similar move a couple of years later.

Finally, there's a sister forum to this one, where many of the posters also remember your father. I think more of them have met him in person because more of them are from NY or the the Northeast. I'm going to start a thread there, pointing to this one. I'm sure several of them will gladly share memories as well. Now that I think about it, I think one of the posters there has a video of your father paying that Ravel piece at my party. Maybe she can dig it up.

Yes! I remember meeting you at the restaurant before the Carnegie Hall performance. That was such a pleasant time! And thank you so much for that picture of you and my dad, that's definitely a keepsake.

And you're spot on. I'm a triple major (English, Sociology, Psychology) in Queens College, currently finishing up my last year.

Thank you for all of the links and the thread you created. It's hard remembering someone who passed away sometimes; it takes you on this never-ending loophole of unanswered questions and sadness. Posting here, it's not a loophole at all. Just good memories of happier times when he was with us.

Thank you! I did this late last night and found some interesting posts from him. I definitely see what you mean by "He and I often crossed swords" because WOW. I had no idea my dad was so argumentative on the internet. For a man who told me to get off my high horse so many times as I grew up, he should have taken the same advice LOL

It's not your Dad's fault. Back then Ivorythumper would have gotten in an online fight with Mr Rogers, if you gave him the chance. :)

Seriously, though, this was much more of a biker bar back then. But in comparison to guys like me others, your Dad was pretty calm and reserved.

 A very warm welcome to you! Of course I remember your dad. He always struck me as an incredibly intelligent, well rounded person. He knew so much about so many things, and had thoughtful, insightful, comments on a huge variety of issues. What I remember, and miss the most was his delicious sense of humour. I bet he was a terrific dad.

I hope you stick around; really lovely to see you here, and to have the opportunity to reminisce about Phlebas.
