The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

I realize Americans have a compulsion to be number 1 at everything, but really guys, trying to compete with Nazi Germany for the title of 'Most violent nation' by posting photos of gangsters and movie actors is pretty weird. At least one of those actors isn't even American. |

I'd humbly suggest that historically the English have a record of more violent behavior than Americans, however it's typically not something we're particularly proud of. We've certainly been at it a lot longer. |

Uh, no, F. that. Getting in a voluntary line in the middle of a wide open field and just shooting at each other is (1) tactically stupid and (2) more than a little metal. Our armed forces kick ass, but we don't have a monopoly on badassery, especially the farther back you go. |

No but we live a hell of a lot longer as soldiers. |

Typically, you wait until the war's been going a couple of years before joining in, so that's only to be expected. |

Yep. This crap about standing in an open field shooting at each other may be metal but it is also stupid. |

Back to the original thread starter...Campus police are not issued tasers. Just a handgun and pepper spray. At least that's not quite as bad as LSU...my wife's cousin was issued a handgun and a MP5 submachinegun when he worked for them... |

Meanwhile in Oklahoma, police killed a deaf man. http://edition.cnn.com/2017/09/21/us/police-shoot-deaf-man-oklahoma-city-trnd/index.html Come on, Jolly, tell me how the policemen didn't know he was deaf and how they were completely justified to use deadly force against the guy. If everything else fail, you can deflect any guilt of the police by blaming it on the US being a violent society. You can do it! |

There are somewhere around 900 people killed by police in the U.S. each year. Most from being shot, some from being tasered, some from physical violence. There are somewhere around 75 cops shot and killed each year in the line of duty, probably another 30 or so die while on duty from other things, such as car crashes. There are about 323,000,000 people in the United States. So, yes, if you look hard enough, you can cherry pick a handful of bad shootings every year. Maybe 1%. Or less. |
