Question About the Internet

Often when you visit a website, a box appears in the upper left corner requesting your permission to 'show notifications', and giving you a choice of clickies, whether to 'accept' or 'block'. What does this mean?

With time-honored peasant mistrust of the unknown, I have always clicked 'block'.

Thank you in advance.

Block those notifications unless you want to see annoying popup windows from those websites.

It makes sense for a limited set of websites, but most of the time it doesn't.
