HOLY CARP!!!
Woke up to eerie yellow skies again (more forest fire smoke blowing the ways), a couple of ravens cawing and circling the house, and a recently released skunk bomb. Can I just go back to bed and pull the covers over my head?

yep. Lots of skunks around lately; the smell is in the air regularly. Not very pleasant when the weather is so hot - couldn't sleep without open windows.

Same horrible fires here, everything covered with sprinkling of ash.

In the Columbia River Gorge, the fire has moved west towards Portland, they were able to save the lodge at Multnomah Falls, but the fire has jumped the river into Washington. Very sad, the Gorge near Portland is (was) an incredible scenic area. Mother Nature will repair, but doubt I'll see it in my lifetime.

And this all started as a result of a couple of kids/teenagers out in the extremely dry woods, lighting firecrackers.

Wishing for Fall rains, but that is not going to happen for a long time.

Wow.

I'll be traveling the Gorge next July. It should prove interesting. I had no idea that the lodge at Multnomah was in jeopardy.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Air quality was dismal, with ash falling from the sky and smoke limiting views of the 620-foot falls, the nation's second highest waterfall, and nearby Columbia River. More than 2 million people visit the falls each year, making it the most popular natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest, according to the U.S. Forest Service

Lt. Damon Simmons, a spokesman for the state fire marshal, said it's "pretty surreal to see that area on fire."

"You see fire above and working its way through those areas where those beautiful falls are, and it's pretty heartbreaking," he said.

Is this the same fire from a couple of weeks ago?

So sorry to hear this. I was in the area last year and just thought it was beautiful.

Friday,
No, different fire started by at least one idiot 15 yr. old. He and his pals were seen throwing smoke bombs and other lit stuff off a cliff, having a grand old time. They almost made it out, but they were reported to police by a woman who saw them, and the cops pulled them over before they got on the freeway.

The earlier fire still burns, the "new" fire ended up trapping approximately 100 people between the two fires. A friend of mine went up and waited in the parking lot at Eagle Creek to wait for rescue crews to lead out the hikers, his daughter was one of the 100. There is a well-known falls with pool very popular for swimming, about 2 miles up the trail. Everyone made it out, but it was harrowing to be trapped between two fires, and there was no other way out. Extremely rugged terrain, nearly vertical cliffs.

Winds are beginning to change, pushing east (inland) instead of west. That should help calm the aggressive movement of the combined fires tomorrow. There is still light ash falling, the moon is still spooky red.
