Wow. Wow, wow, wow.

"If you find it impossible to respect your elders, attempt at least to revere your betters. The destruction of Virginia's monuments to her war dead is sacrilege and those who urge and execute it are nothing more than cemetery vandals. There is no honor in this course of wanton destruction and, morally, you equate yourself with ISIS which shares your contempt for actual culture, something you both so manifestly lack. It is more than history, more than art. When you pursue this thing, you diminish the honor of these heroes :rightarrow: not one bit. You only emphasize by contrast how puny and insignificant by contrast you are. You reveal how painfully short of their measure you fall.

"And it is that that galls you, isn't it? You despise good men because their virtue condemns your depravity. You know you lack their character, their courage, their integrity, their stature. You know that if you served 50 terms, you will never amount to 1/100th of the men they were."

Yes
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

He sounds like the good-ol'-boy equivalent of a high-school teen who's just been told someone doesn't like his favorite band.

I don't think it's reasonable to measure someone's moral fiber on what they think of a cherry-picked group of Civil War generals.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Ain't never seen a teenager write quite like that, although I'm sure there is always an exception.

He stole it from me. I said it in response to what aqua said, not what you said. We both must have posted at the same time. I couldn't believe he actually said it.

For the past seven years I have made Rockbridge County, Virginia my home. That was a dream planted in my heart as a 14-year-old boy decades ago on my first visit to the Commonwealth.

You say that because you just so happen to like the message. Lots of young folks out there can write that well. Most don't because it's not an inclination.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Does the letter have the requisite enchromicity?
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

I'll do you one better, Larry: I think Lee's awesome and openly defend the existence of Confederate monuments.

As to that first point, I like Lee a whole lot. But like everyone else on this planet, Lee's not liked by everybody and I acknowledge that there's nothing wrong or strange about that. So no, there's nothing "morally wrong" with not being a Lee fan. That guy's up his ass about that. It's hyperbole.

As to the second point, I can see both sides of it. "Confederate monument" is not synonymous with "monument to slavery," and I think it's a testament to our very freedoms that those monuments are allowed to exist. History is full of otherwise reasonable governments that engage in revisionist history by eliminating all evidence of their adversaries. It's beyond gracious that we openly acknowledge the South's history and their contribution to shaping the country. Giving tours around old plantations and sightseeing trips around where slaves were brought in off the ships is about the healthiest thing we could be doing in terms of understanding and coming to terms with our past.

Those who see the monuments as a symbol of oppression or whatever obviously don't understand any of this. It's kind of like guns; lack of understanding goes a long way toward inciting hysterics.

But right now, in 2017, there's not a whole lot of understanding period going on right now; the monument debate is just a manifestation of that. It's not about the monuments—if we didn't have those, it would be about something else—it's about the growing divide between social groups in America.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I beg to differ.
