I've looked around, and can't seem to find what the controversy about him is. I know he was eliminated, to the outrage of Marta Argerich, in the Chopin competition. I understand that some consider his interpretations to be...idiosyncratic. However, they're not any more so than Gould's. His technique seems to be really good, and his touch on the piano has power and subtlety.

What's the big deal?

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Well he quit piano after his teacher/wife died. Picked it up many years later and completely changed his focus and style. Much more eccentric.

Find a recording of him as a late middle aged man.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

HOLY CARP!!!
Playing mainstream classical repertoire, where each piece has been played a million times by thousands of virtuosos before you, where else is there to go musically, that would be "original" and not "eccentric"?

I would love to hear a "then" vs "now" performance of the same work.
