My horrible day

HOLY CARP!!!
Drove into Toronto with a friend today for the union labour day parade. Around 8:30 I felt what I assumed to be an eyelash in my eye. The usual making my eyes water wasn't doing anything so I went into a bathroom to flush my eye out with water. Wasn't helping. Using my iPhone flashlight and the mirror I was able to find the little black speck that was stuck to the inside of my eyelid. Bought an eye wash kit at the pharmacy and that didn't help. Halfway through the parade (3-4hrs with this in my eye at this point) I couldn't handle it anymore so we left the parade and I called my Dr's office which was closed and referred me to a nurse hotline. The nurse said I need to go to an ER. At this point we're at least an hour from where I parked. So I found an ER 28 minutes away on foot. The dr froze my eye and got it out but said I scratched my eye and it's gonna hurt pretty bad for a few days. He wrote me a prescription for an antibiotic ointment. He said it probably won't get infected but it's just to be safe. Took two subways back to where I was parked and stopped at a Starbucks to pee before the drive back to Hamilton. I get home and can't find the prescription anywhere. Last place I definitely had it was the Starbucks. I call them. Yup, they have it. So now my prescription is at a Starbucks in f*cking downtown Toronto.

I called the hospital and they said it depends if the Dr is still there whether they can make a new one I might be out of luck, call back in a few hours to see if they found it.

How important is it to get this? I'm absolutely not driving back downtown today and if I go tomorrow it'll have to be after work and I'm going to have to deal with rush hour traffic, turning an hour and a half round trip into easily 3-4 hours.

We probably don't see eye-to-eye on this but I say go get it now, get it over with. You are just going to worry about it.

Bring a friend, have a nice meal.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

The antibiotic ointment is *probably* not all that important. More of a prophylactic type of thing.

But, yeah, it's gonna hurt like a sonofabitch for a while. Corneal abrasions hurt like hell. You might want to consider getting a patch to keep the eye closed, so that your lid isn't constantly moving over the cornea, irritating it more.

Get the ointment tomorrow, if you can.

Needs to stay moist if possible (artificial tears. Patch it tonight and get your antibiotic tomorrow.

You might try to make it without the antibiotic, if so, do keep it moist and if it starts to matte, you probably have an infection firing up. Best thing is to use the antibiotic the doc prescribed or what your regular doc will prescribe in the morning.

Actually, see if they can messenger it over to you. It would cost, what, $20? Probably worth it, eh?

As far as keeping it moist...Refresh PM gel will help. It makes it a bit more comfortable, a bit less pain. Won't help protect against the infection, though.

If the Starbucks can messenger it to me? You think it would be that cheap? I'm 71km away according to google.

I was going to suggest just good old sea salt/distilled water eye wash until you can see your regular doctor tomorrow and get a new prescription....but you likely don't have either at home, and would still need to go out.

Sorry pal, hope it starts feeling better soon. Been there, done that. :(

I wonder if your pharmacy would accept a phone photo version of the prescription? Is that a thing?

Problem is, the prescription has already been filled.

The original doc can have another one called in, if they can reach him.

Oh. I didn't realise he'd had it filled. I assumed Riley was talking about the bit of paper.

I would have no choice but to recommend you deal with it today but I personally would wait until tomorrow and use over the counter stuff to keep it clean, moist and soothed.

In that case get a picture image and take it to the pharmacy. I can't see how they wouldn't serve you. What is more important your eye or som basic run of the mill antibiotic that sits in medicine shelves across your country.

Worth a shot. I'm sure some at Starbucks could send you the pic, and you could phone the pharmacy and ask.

I really can't see that being allowed but I can try if it doesn't work out with the hospital.

The hospital should have a record of the visit and should be able to send the prescription to your pharmacy. All they need is the pharmacy's number.

Yep. I didn't realize it was not the actual medication, but the 'script.

That should be easy.
