SEOUL -- Kim Jong Un's pursuit of nuclear weapons, incendiary rhetoric and odd appearance often cast the North Korean leader as an erratic, even deranged dictator.

Yet analysts and South Korean government officials who track North Korea closely describe Kim as a clever and rational, if brutal, figure who has solidified control over his country since assuming power in 2011.

Developing nuclear weapons that threaten the United States is his insurance policy against being overthrown by a U.S.-led coalition, said Joo Seong-ha, a defector who was imprisoned in North Korea before escaping to South Korea.

A nuclear weapons program is “the most powerful bargaining chip that North Korea has," said Joo.

<snip>

"The idea that Kim Jong Un's decisions, particularly about his nuclear weapons program, are irrational is a myth," Town said. "The caricature, cartoonish image of him is easy for people to believe."

Either way, he is the most dangerous security threat President Trump faces. North Korea has launched more than a dozen test missiles since February and may be within a year or two of being able to place a nuclear warhead on a missile capable of reaching cities in the United States.

"We are at a point in time where choices will have to be made one way or the other," Gen. Mark Milley, the Army chief of staff, said recently. "None of them are good."

I thought that was well known.... As well as China not wanted a unified Penninsula.

Nvertheless I don't think the current US regime will allow for NK nuclear weapons that can strike the US.

It would seem unwise to allow them to deliver nukes anywhere. But, like Iran, the time to stop it was way back when.

Let's say we receive evidence that they can attack the US with nukes. Then what?

Best thing is probably to assassinate him or arrange a coup.

The problem is not just Kim but the apparatus that has kept the Kims in power. They are all deathly afraid of what happens if they let go of the stranglehold they have on 25 million people. They know if the ever attack anyone that is all over so that mitigates the threat somewhat.

If you could get the military rank and file behind removing the regime a coup could be just the thing.

The military probably will not get behind removing Kim. Reason being, they are guaranteed food and a paycheck from Dear Leader. There are no such guarantees if they bite the hand that feeds... But if it looked like Kim was on the ropes, or he was in real danger of becoming a priority "asset," eh... then maybe. Too much is unknown, and too much is pure speculation, at this point.

We know NK loses if they drop a nuke on LA or Tokyo.

But who wins? China, Iran, Russia, Mexico?

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

I don't know exactly but I doubt we will let NK have the capability to nuke the US. Assassination, negotiation, China pressure, limited strike, all out attack, pre-emptive nuclear attack are all options.

This won't be like Iran where another country gets to join the club.

I know, not a lot of fun, thinking about what might happen.

I'd like to know who's supplying him with weapons-grade uranium. Maybe the snake can be cut off at the neck.

‘They worry he’s kind of nuts,’ one observer says.
Quote:

South Korea’s response overall to Trump’s recent pronouncements has been much more muted than its past explosions against its protector — a sign that they know Trump is a different kind of president.

“They think they’re dealing with an unreasonable partner and complaining about it isn’t going to help — in fact, it might make it worse,” said David Straub, a former State Department official who dealt with both Koreas and recently published a book about anti-Americanism in South Korea.

“Opinion polls show South Koreans have one of the lowest rates of regard for Trump in the world and they don’t consider him to be a reasonable person,” Straub said. “In fact, they worry he’s kind of nuts, but they still want the alliance.”
