Finally
Among the last few Sci-Fi books I've read (Cibola Burn and Andromeda), one of the themes is how living on a planet, no matter how "earth-like" it might be in terms of atmosphere, gravity, weather, will pose unseen and unanticipated risks that we cannot even imagine. There may very well be pathogens that, seeing a new host, will take advantage of us in ways that we can't even imagine.

I'm not surprised that just leaving the pull of gravity has unforeseen effects. Twenty years ago, who would have though that compromise of the immune system would be a result of long-term exposure to micro-gravity? All of the thinking had to do with bone loss, muscle loss, circulatory effects, etc.

And then, of course, there's the radiation...

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Yep. It is far more complicated than an adequate propulsion system. That I think we will be able to conquer. This other stuff, especially the pathogens? Not so easy.

Radiation shielding and artificial gravity will take care of a lot of in-flight stuff. Once we get on the surface, who knows?

So take good care of this Earth. Don't screw around with pollutants and green houses gases and radioactive elements for short-term economic gains.

Why else would you screw around with them?

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Need to do away with computers. Lots of oil used for the plastic cases, rare Earth elements used in the chips....Just all kinds of non-renewable resources.

And Lord, the coal we have to burn to run them!

I'm a little confused.

Quote:

The results showed that in weightlessness, the immune system acts like it does when the body is infected because the human body doesn’t know what to do and tries to turn on all possible defense systems,

Wouldn't that make you more resistant to a cold or flu?

The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
