I never bought this Indigenous People stuff. If you want to say that Mr. Columbus was a mean old white man, fine. But you can't claim moral high ground for Indigenous People. The chances are they killed a lot of good people to get the land just like Mr. Columbus. http://ktla.com/2017/08/30/l-a-city-councilmen-at-odds-over-renaming-of-columbus-day/

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

For the most part I have not bought in either. For one, I do not agree that what happened to the North American aboriginals at the hands of the English and French colonial powers or, in the case of the USA, the Americans, can be described as genocide. Ethnic cleansing and forced assimilation yes and even then, only beginning in the 19th century but not genocide. Having said that however, I also recognize that the history of the Spanish and Portuguese towards aboriginals in the Caribbean and Latin America is an entirely different narrative. While Columbus may have had no small role in that history, he was by far overshadowed by others who followed such as Hernando Cortez or the Pizarro brothers. In any case I do not understand why Americans feel they need to celebrate Christopher Columbus. He never set foot on what we know is US territory and he most certainly did not discover America. As far as I know he continued to insist he had discovered a short cut to Asia until the day he died in 1506. So as far as I'm concerned celebrating North America's diverse First Nations makes a a helluva lot more relevant sense than celebrating the feats of some Genoese huckster who just happened to bend the ear of Isabelle of Spain. |

It was a momentous and portentous occasion. Cultures that had been isolated for tens of thousands of years (with a few minor exceptions) were from then on to have constant contact. Indeed it didn't go well for most of the native peoples. But it is still an event of world-historic importance. I'd be up for renaming the holiday along the lines of this - but 'indigenous peoples day' doesn't really capture the importance of the event. At all. |

Usually the conquerors write the history. It just doesn't seem right to let the conquered write it. |

I know what you mean. We don't celebrate a Columbus Day either. We do however observe the birthday of Queen Victoria in late May. I would wager she will survive all these infantile purges currently the rage in North America. Have you considered replacing Columbus Day with a William Tecumseh Sherman Day? Perhaps a Phil Sheridan Day? |

Actually, as much as I'm not happy with some of William T's actions, he's held in fairly high esteem down here. First off, he was a fightin' man. Secondly, he actually liked and respected Southerners. Third, any Chancellor of LSU is respected in the Bayou State. |

Don't think of them as Indigenous Peoples. Think of them as First Wave Russian Invaders. The mastadons were outraged. See, then it all looks better. Took 15,000 years to repel them, but things moved slower then. |

There was a male and female statue in the park, facing each other. They loved each other very much, and one day, a fairy granted them a half hour of life. They leapt from their respective pedestals and ran off into the bushes. After much commotion, they returned, faces flush, out of breath. The fairy said, "You still have fifteen minutes," to which the female replied to the male, "Great! This time, you hold the pigeon and I'll sh!t on it!" |

There are statues of black men holding a watermelon, There are statues of injuns holding cigars. There needs to be some statues of a white guy holding a jar of mayonnaise. |
