One of the saddest things about our politicized media histrionics is that the rest of the world buys that narrative. People are actually afraid to come to america because they think our cops are bloodthirsty maniacs who love shooting people. And now they probably think that most of our conservative white folk are neo-Nazis. |

My New Zealand sister came to visit here late last year and brought her 11 year old daughter. After Mr. Trump won the daughter said she was afraid to come here. She was serious. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

One of the only people to have ever called me "white" pejoratively in casual conversation was a white woman from CA I worked with. She wasn't mean spirited about it but I think she thought she was trying to make a point. She was pretty smart, and successful. She was living in Germany at the time because her husband got transferred there and his job was more important than hers. Shocking, she married someone higher on the socio-economic ladder than she was. Even successful, progressive women do that. The day after Trump's election we had a meeting and the first thing she wanted to talk about was how her nine year old son cried at the results. Apparently this was supposed to make a point about how genuinely awful the situation was. Then we have Steve's apparently honestly held impression that people who fly the confederate flag are white supremacists. I don't think you have to go further than CA to see what the rest of the world thinks about America. |

John, that's not quite right, is it? There ARE blood-thirsty folk among the Muslim refugees. Do I really have to list all the tragedies in Europe for you to admit that simple fact? There was no travel ban placed on the vast majority of Muslim countries, just ones where we knew there were bad problems with jihadists, especially ISIS. As for immigration, it is well past time for the U.S. to do a comprehensive review and overhaul of its system. We may well have the leakiest borders of any nation in the world. Time for it to stop. We (the nation) need to have a comprehensive immigration policy which addresses what the nation needs, not what some people would like to see. |

I agree with most of this. I have gone through the legal immigration process, and do know that there is a lot of abuse of the system. I have also had the opportunity to work in less developed places in the world and can completely understand why people want to come to the US, and why most of the immigration is for economic reasons. Someone once said that a true way to determine how desirable a country is is to completely open the borders all around the world. See which way the people flow. The US needs immigration. I do not believe that illegal immigration is as bad for the country as some people say, but I do believe that things should be done legally (especially since I spent a lot of time and money on this LOL). There are many hard working people in the US who are there illegally who contribute much more than they benefit. However, there is also the opposite. The struggle is determing who is who and fixing that. I dont see any easy answer. |

Interesting point. Probably true, but as far as I know, the US is the only 1st world country on the planet that comes even close to that standard. As a somewhat related point, someone once said that the Berlin Wall wasn't built to keep people out of East Berlin. Absolutely. Look to almost any other country: Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, and see how they handle (legal) immigration policy. Are they all wrong? |
