A few posts from another board I frequent...the lady's handle is Txsteader and she lives outside of the Houston area...Thought y'all might find it interesting. The water came up so high, so fast that people didn't have time to really do anything. And conditions by daylight Sunday morning were such that people couldn't get in to rescue their animals. My neighbors horses have been walking around in water up to their butts for 3 days & no doubt they're dealing w/ fire ants. All their goats have drowned. Trump brought the cavalry! DD texted earlier that there are National Guard tanks and trucks lined up on the Galveston seawall as far as the eye can see. And it wasn't half an hour later, they were out here on the mainland, going house-house checking if everyone is alright or needed to leave. Rain has ended but for a few light, scattered showers. Strong north wind helping to blow water offshore. Water continues to recede but guessing it will take a day or two to drain enough for cars to get through. Thank goodness because we're all getting weary and beginning to go stir crazy, lol. Need to be out there doing what needs to be done! And... Honestly, I think it was because the governor bypassed the red tape and let people volunteer to help. Actually, he put out the call for volunteers because he knew that this was way more than state agencies could handle. And, time being critical, it takes too long for federal help to get set up and moving. If you remember, there were lots and lots of people who'd gone to N.O. to volunteer to help but the state refused to let them in to help. I truly believe that's why so many people died...especially after seeing the difference in TX response. Even one of our local reporters mentioned last night that, if not for these volunteers, the death toll would have been significantly higher. It has made my heart sing to hear the same response from volunteers, over and over again, when asked why they're doing this. "Because we're Texans and this is what we do in Texas. We take care of each other." I'm so proud of Texas! |

That is true. The lessons learned there, helped keep fatalities down during the flooding around Baton Rouge. For that flood, private citizens were allowed to help. Many say during that time, twice as many people were rescued by private citizens than by government entities. |

I read "Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital" a couple of years ago. It was a slanted history of what happened during Katrina (at least the part that was subject to interpretation). It pointed out the work of the "Cajun Navy" (though I don't recall if it was called that at the time). But, I don't remember reporting of volunteers being turned away. I'm not, by any means, saying it didn't happen; I just don't remember it. |

The Cajun Navy was a spontaneous organization that originated with the Baton Rouge flood. |
