I’d just like to point out to the misguided tweeter that Hillary Clinton actually carried the election in Houston with 707,914 votes to Trump’s 545,955 votes.

One of the best guys I've ever known at running a successful restaurant once told me "You're only as good as your last meal".

With the proliferation of social media with all of its benefits and pitfalls, I would think any organization would either want to put their best foot forward or not dabble in some forms of social media at all.

I think their apology could have been much more straightforward and simple:

We regret the tweets made by our Social Media Coordinator as they are simply horrible and do not reflect the character or mission of this organization. The person responsible is no longer with our organization. We again apologize for his bizzare and insensitive behavior.

And that's about all they needed to do.

And that's about all they needed to do.

We don’t condone the denouncement or imperilment of any human, individual or group; ultimately because that serves no useful purpose and is rather an impairment to progressive change. Our views extend equally toward those that do good and evil in the world, for both have much to teach us about the state of humanity. We’re not for a moment implying that the targets in which the Tweets offensive content are either good, bad, or otherwise because we don’t believe those words are more than labels based upon an individual’s perception of another. Our organization views people for what they are: humans. Everything else is merely a means by which to divide us into opposing factions.

Which is more wacky, the original tweets or the apology?

The original tweets.

But the byzantine apology runs a close second...

See, the problem here is this. If these folks insist on continuing to publicly declare themselves an existential threat to our way of life, sooner or later we're going to need to take them seriously. That's when things get real.

I despise the concept of Twitter. It does, however, have a tendency to reveal the idiots in our midst.

It might have been their smartest move. They seemed to barely exist before this. It could be a last ditch ploy to make a go of things before dissolution. I applaud those that can actually read their entire apology. Good lord.

Tend to read a lot of long-form exposition on the 'Gram, then, maybe? How about Faceyspace?

Twitter's damn annoying, but it's the way we're going. People are willing to spend real money and I don't know how many hours per week prettying up their breakfast photos with filters, but they can't be bothered to write anything past a few emojis and hashtags.

Our collective attention span is shrinking. And, we're moving away from the written word and moving more towards visual communication. So our literacy is going to go down—it already has—and our visual sensibilities are going to go up. It's just the way it's going.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I'm serious. Give this 20 years and see if I'm right. I don't wanna be, but I think the change is pretty impossible to ignore at this point.

Unfortunately, I notice it happening with me. And I go out of my way to avoid video and social media. That's why I'm so bad with technology.

I used to love spending hours reading the newspaper. I used to be able to read long articles in magazines. I can't do that now. Part of it is because we don't have newspapers anymore. Part of it is because it's harder for me to read on a screen. And I need glasses now. And I have other crap I should be doing....

Anyway, I used to linger over certain phrases or words because I liked how it was composed. Now, I get impatient and annoyed that people can't just get to the point already.

Wait a minute....does this mean I'm getting old?

Jon posted an interesting statistic years ago about the information content of an average sized newspaper article compared to the TV news coverage of the same thing. They differed by like a factor of 10.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Yeah, it's a Thing.

I mean, there are 300+ million Americans. Yes, there are scads and scads of us who still like to read the paper. And people other than English Lit majors still buy and read Ulysses. But overall, I think written communication is quickly becoming less dominant.

Just look at what people do. What kinds of daily writing do they take part in? Text messages, social media posts, e-mails. What's the level of effort they put in with those? Very little—enough to get the point across.

But as for photos, images (like memes), and videos, people put time into those. They give a shit. A lot of it is due to novelty—never before could people just make whole movies on their own, and now they can. But I think the trend is just going to continue in that direction. The internet is one giant ass attention-grab, and writing loses out there; images are immediate, and videos are more intimate.
