Exercise - it actually bloody works!

Two months ago I bought a bike, primarily so I could cycle with the kids - Yes, it's another topic all about me!!!!

Obviously, the kids don't want to be seen dead with me, however that hasn't stopped me. Cycled every weekend, up from about 20 miles a day when I started to about 35 now. To try and stay in shape during the week, I do 30 minutes on the exercise bike.

7 pounds of useless fat gone in less than 2 months. And no, I've not had brain surgery.

In reality, it's not about the weight, although that's nice. The real deal is that I actually found a form of exercise that I enjoy. I haven't cycled in about 20 years, and I haven't done it for fun for about 35 years.

Congratulations, John. As Mik said, isn't it great?

I am relegated mostly to stretching exercises nowadays due to annoying back issues. I'm hoping eventually to return to "real" exercise, a la Rosie the Rowing Machine. But I would hate to do no exercise at all.

I've exercised fairly regularly for the last few years, but it's always a struggle, mainly because of the boredom factor, so I end up doing 30 minutes tops, which is OK for cardio fitness, but doesn't really help with the middle-aged spread.

Cycling outdoors is actually fun. I can do a couple of hours early in the morning with no problem at all. I'm actually dreading winter because I'll have to stop doing it.

Well, let me add my two bits.

In June of 2016, my doctor yelled at me because I was too heavy. He found my blood sugar and A1C too high, and told me I'd better fix it. So, I got this app called "MyFitnessPal" that tracks food (you can scan the barcode on an item) and activity. By keeping my carbs under 150 gm per day and limiting my calories to less than 2K, I was able to drop 25 lb from June through December. Very little effort, other than paying attention to what went in. ALso, getting rid of the crap that one eats (chips, fries, etc) helped a lot, I imagine.

So, when I saw my internist in November, my A1C was just on the upper reaches of normal, and my blood sugar was OK. He asked me, "So, now that you're retired, what kind of exercise are you doing?"

"Er, uhh, well..."

"Get moving, George."

So, in January, I bought a nice comfy pair of shoes and started walking. I started with a 2 mile walk, a couple of times a week, and worked my way up to about 5 and a half miles thrice weekly. I've been very good about it. Takes about an hour and a half and I average about 16 min 20 sec per mile (using the "MapMyWalk" helps!).

Since then, another 16 lb.

So, in 15 months, I'm down 41 lb. and I'm getting a LOT of reading done!

Nice going George. Your weight loss puts mine to shame.

I got the blood sugar warning from my doctor, too. I'm not too overweight, but I could maybe lose another 14 pounds. I'm waiting for the medical in September to see what effect this has had.

The guy at the store where I buy my (cheap) Scotch noticed the loss, so we started talking about it.

He asked me what my goal was, and I told him that I really don't have one. I just want to keep doing what I'm doing and I land where I land. Not obsessing over a specific number makes it easy, and so when things fluctuate up and down (as they will) it's no big deal.

I'm not really worried about a specific weight. A few years back I saw myself in some photographs and thought 'Who's that podgy old bugger?'. I basically want to stop thinking that.

down 41 lb

Nice.

The beginning is really like magic.

For several months, with no diet changes, I lost almost exactly one pound per 3,500 calories of exercise. Of course the thing is you can't keep that up forever. Now I can burn 3,500 calories and gain weight.

So the beginning was fun, then comes the plateau.

Now the motivation comes from feeling better, and avoiding the blood sugar problems and statements like this:

I've also heard whisky can help with cognitive function.

I gotta get on this. Planned to start this morning, but you know, sleep was more important at the time. hopefully tomorrow.

Congrats, everyone. Combined weight loss for everyone is several hundred pounds, let's eat!

I'm downloading George's suggested "MyFitnessPal" right now. Why do these apps always ask to access all info to provide their app? Access to photos, bluetooth, etc. Oh well, I've got nothing to hide, except, you know.

Any other apps that people find useful for exercise or weight loss, would be great to suggest. There are, as usual, so many to choose from.

I used MapMyRide for cycling. It's very handy to track your distance and average speed.

Yup. I have a Fitbit (Thanks for the recommendation, Jon!) that keeps track of my activity as well, and it interfaces nicely with MapMyWalk and MyFitnessPal.

One of the things I've found so helpful about them is that you can really get granular and know what it is you're doing. (For example, I found that biking burns 75-80% as many calories as running—I expected it to be more like 40-45.)

Grats on the exercise, D'Oh!
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Aqua, you have to be really moving on a bike to burn 75% of the calories per mile as running. OTOH walking vs. jogging vs running doesn't make that much difference in calories per mile.

I don't do miles. I look at time.

Biking: 13 cals/min
Running: 16 cals/min
Walking: 6 cals/min

Those are my stats based on the last five of each activity when they lasted over an hour.

Probably, to some extent, depends on the pace of the exercise.

Here' what WebMD calculates for jogging vs walking:

Yeah, for walking you need to walk a lot longer to go a mile, so I think about it in terms of time spent.

If you are burning that many per minute biking then you are biking hard which is very different than a leisurely ride. The wheel is supposed to make life easier... But I get your point, if you are in a spinning class or hauling it's approaching the same burn as running or jogging.

Cycling to me feels about 2/3 of the way towards jogging, and way more energetic than walking, but I push reasonably hard, and I suck at running.

The real advantage of cycling is it doesn't destroy your knees.

The other advantage is now I can save up for a kick-ass bike. I can't think of anything associated with running that I'd actually want to buy for fun.
