For operation Downfall, the U.S. seriously considered chemical weapons and conducted some tests with that in mind. Eventually, it was decided to use nukes as tactical weapons, hitting Kyushu with 7-9 atomic bombs.

Would have been a heckuva landing...The invasion fleet was going to be about twice the size of D - Day and the invasion troops consisted of 30 divisions. Awaiting them was almost as many Japanese and 4000 kamikazes.

I think the American public would have been appalled at the casualties, but I don't think they would have walked away from invading Japan. I do think they would have wanted Marshall to be as efficient and Savage as possible in the pursuit of Nimitz's three goals - Kill Japs. Kill Japs. Kill Japs.

Finally
I read, somewhere, that the US only had three atomic weapons in its arsenal in late summer of 1945. One was used as a test, and the other two were used in Japan.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Operation Downfall was timed to try to bypass the storm season, but Marshall also timed it to allow the use of nuclear weapons. He knew what was in the pipeline.

The use of napalm was also to be extensive, delivered mostly by B-17s and B-24s being shifted from the European Theater. The B29s were mostly to be concentrated in continued strategic bombing. The invasion of Kyushu also allowed the U.S. to use a plethora of land based tactical aircraft.

While this was going on, I assume the Soviets were going to be handed China, cutting off any imports from the Asian mainland.

Even though the Japanese were prepared and fanatical fighters, they couldn't even issue full ammunition loads to all of their troops and food was becoming limited.

If the American people could have had a bit more patience, we could have bombed and starved them to death.
