I've never been a "hat guy." Hated them when I was a kid, never wore them as an adult. This winter, I decided that, if I'm going to spend any time outdoors, a hat would be a reasonable thing if I'm out for an hour and a half or so. I bought a couple of fedoras that serve my purposes well. But... It's August here in Chicago. Last night I went to a get-together for some of the folks that are leaving my former hospital, and this guy showed up, wearing a straw hat. ![]() I really don't understand. If the sun is beating down on you, I get the need to protect yourself from it. But, if you're going to be indoors, why bother, other than as a fashion statement. By the way, I told this guy, "For years, I've said that you're the whitest guy I've ever met. Your hat just proved it." |

For about 18 years the dermatologist has been pounding into me the need to wear a hat when I go out. I always put on a hat for yard work or if I'll be in the sun for more than a short while. But at no time would I wear a hat indoors. You can find internet sites that say it is OK. It is not. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |
