Call me an old fogey, but I want the scouts to be what they were intended to be. I want a scout to be taught loyalty, integrity, self independence and a responsibility towards others. I think the scouts did a wonderful job of that for many years. I think many of the local chapters still do a great job. I do think many chapters and much of the national leadership has gone PC nuts. |

As for the changes in Scouting through the years: 1) Larry, there were gay scoutmasters back in your day, but they were in the closet. One of my scoutmasters was gay. Everybody knew it, everybody ignored it, nobody was molested. Since BSA opened up policies allowing gay leaders and scouts, the reported number of sexual incidents has dropped drastically. 2) Gay Scouts - there were gay scouts back in the day as well. It's better for everybody that they are out in the open as opposed to keeping in the shadows. 3) The removal of Christianity from Scouts. This hasn't been handled well. Scouting is a private organization with generally private funding. The troops are generally sponsored by Christian churches. Freedom of Religion does not equate Freedom from Religion. |

Maybe not an old fogey; maybe a man who likes things simple. Like me. I think the higher up you go in any organization, the crazier it gets. But, like you said, the local chapters are okay. I was the leader for my youngest daughter's GS troop. I rarely went to the chapter meetings and kept out of the politics and PC nuttery. Towards the end GS made some changes to how awards were earned and what troops could do to fund raise and decreased outdoor activities in favor of STEM activities and on and on. I admit to ignoring a rule or two if I felt it wasn't right for my girls. Because in the end, that's who I was there for. |

Let me see if I can explain this without someone calling me names.... hahaha Nope.... someone *will* call me names, so I'll just say it straight out: The gays back then when they were "in the closet" weren't like the militant "I'm gay and I'm going to shove it in your face every time I get the chance" gays of today. Back then, being gay had no political agenda, or social agenda. They were as different in how they saw the world from how today's gays see the world as straight people then and straight people now. People forget that a long time ago I made it clear I don't hate gays, and don't care who somebody chooses to love. What I *don't* like is when it is used as a weapon, or for social agendas, political agendas, etc. The gays who were scout leaders or for that matter, scouts - back then pretty much tried to blend in with the rest of the group and not make their sexual preferences an issue. Today that's not the case. Besides, the real point is forcing the scouts to "accept" homosexuals. By your own admission, they were already in the scouts, so quite obviously the goal wasn't to have homosexuals accepted by the boy scout organization - it already had. No - the goal was to score a victory over the boy scouts by an agenda driven socio-political group. |
