There seems to be a big push to convert your lighting, appliances, thermostats, etc. to devices controllable via your smartphone, or perhaps your Amazon echo. Does anyone here use that stuff? Is it any good? Is it actually easier than turning a switch? |

No, but you can do fancier stuff with it. Toggling it remotely, when you're away from the house, or just plain too lazy to get up form the bed or chair or whatever. Scheduling it with more sophistication than simple timers. I haven't gone that far. But years ago I installed a remote controlled dimming light switch for my room, and I'm still very glad I did it after all these years. |

If it's all tied to one device, what happens when you're at the bar, and the Mrs. wants to turn off the lights? Can you link you "smart lights" to more than one smart device? The device may be smart, but are the peripherals? |

We have an ADT app to turn on and off the alarm and unlock the kitchen door. It's good if we want to give a worker or friend access to the house while we're not here, or if we want to check on the home. We also have a front porch camera to see when packages arrive, or who's at the door, all part of the package. |

We thought about "smart home" stuff when we build our house but decided against it. It is, with minor exceptions, a solution in search of a problem. |

My home is a dumb a$$. That's why I am qualified and authorized to take care of it. Before I set out to modernize with high tech, I'd go for in-ground sprinklers. Too lazy to do that, and the digital stuff is down the list in terms of whether I ever would want to get to it. As long as I can figure out how to run a light switch, I'll be OK. Unless I go blind. But then, I'd just be showing off. I do like the camera idea though, especially with so many packages being stolen from people's front doors. Neighbor has lots of (outdated?) motion detector outside lights. Always going on and off, I suspect cats, raccoons or actual thieves maybe. |

Now if there is in-ground grass cutter ... Just imagine little mechanical wonders popping out to cut the grass and then hide back underground. |

That would be a very interesting invention -- think of an auto feed weed wacker on a pop up head that cycles on a grid to cut the grass... But then again, that's why God invented high school kids who will mow your lawn for $15 a week... |

Why clap when you can say, "Alexa, turn on the living room light"? |

Identifying narcissists isn't difficult. Just look for the person who is constantly fishing for compliments and admiration while breaking down over even the slightest bit of criticism. We have the freedom to choose our actions, but we do not get to choose our consequences.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
