I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
While excavating the old porch and walkway, the landscape crew uncovered this rock -- about 16" long x 9.5" wide. Painted with a a large circle, and arrows, and incised with spirals.

Assuming the walkway is original to the house -- 1928 -- its been there for about 90 years. The walkway stone is local "Leiper Stone", from Thomas Leiper's old Revolutionary era quarry near our home. So presumably this was just fill from the same area, but I can't imagine anyone looking at the stone and just burying it...

I'm contacting some archeologists specializing in native American petroglyphs -- any other idea what it might be?

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Yes! I think I'll make a nice wood or acrylic base to display it as a piece of sculpture.

Al Jolson first rock album cover?
Sorry, definitely non-PC and cruel on my part. Al Jolson did not rock, my bad.
Guy looks kinda scared, though. Wonder what else is buried, deep deep down, where you only hear scratching noises in the middle of the night?
Don't worry about it. Possible chance it's nothing that will get you soon, for removing it.

I got a reply from Dr Kurt Carr from the State Museum of Pennsylvania, who showed the photo to his colleagues:

"The consensus here is that your decorated rock dates to the late 19th or early 20th century when there was an interest in Indian culture although usually from a romanticized perspective. The western tribes were no longer a threat and there was a feeling that Indians were going extinct. In response, there were a number of publications about Indians but most were not very accurate. In southeastern Pennsylvania there was an organization called the Redman Society that held regular meetings and conducted “Indian” ceremonies.

It is an interesting piece; we really don’t know what it represents other than it is not old and probably not made by an Indian.

Thanks for contacting the State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Kurt"

You should have asked Larry, who is old, and an Indian.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.
