...for piano lessons? How much do you pay, how long and how often are your lessons? Doing a little research since it's been a long time since I've taken formal lessons. I have no idea how much lessons cost. Granted, it's not like I'm preparing for something (testing, performance). I just want to be a better pianist. All input welcome. edit: Do you go to your teacher or does your teacher come to you? Edited by PattyP, Jul 23 2017, 09:52 PM.

I took lessons in Brooklyn from 2005-2009. They were 60 per half hour, I went to her. Haven't priced them since, but I'm seriously considering it. |

Thanks for your response, Jon. I've toyed with taking lessons again for awhile. Watching the masterclass video that George posted and seeing the video of y'all at the recent piano party has given me a little poke. |

I know Klaus and George take lessons. Maybe they'll chime in. |

(and I thought this was a thread about Aqua's sister) Anyhow, in the 'burbs of Chicago it's anywhere from $55 to $80 for an hour. |

I pay $140 per hour, but that's rather exceptional. My kids pay $35 per hour. |

Consider taking piano lessons at a local college or university if its available. Some have a Community Music Division in which non-students can take group or private piano lessons. There’s a college in my city that has a Community Music Division where I took group piano lessons for one year (three consecutive quarters). And it’s not just the piano but other instruments that they offer as well. Group classes and private lessons start and end with college semesters/quarters. The teachers are professors at the college. Group lessons are cheaper and geared towards beginners. Private lessons are more expensive. I forgot what I paid for group lessons because it was a long time ago. Classes are held at the college, not your home. Pianos can be either acoustical or digital for private lessons and digital only for group classes. Classes/lessons are usually held on weekday evenings only.

Sounds pricey! When I was in middle school I took guitar lessons for a year. My dad had just got back into guitar and tried to get me into it too. He took lessons too. It was $13.50 per half hour. Edit: just looked up their site. This was 15 years ago that I went, but they still charge $13.50/half hour today. |

I'm curious. For those of you that can determine what you are paid per hour to make a living, how much would you charge someone for an hour of your education, background, experience and expertise? Is a serious, devoted musician worth less per hour than you? Yeah, I know, volatile subject, not a life requirement activity, it's just for fun as a leisure activity. Wish my attorney had that attitude per minute. |

Just curious, Klaus ... have you contributed source code into open source, especially code that nobody pays you to write? |

I have a few free Apps in the App Store, but in general I think giving it away is a big mistake. If you have a "loss leader" that really leads to real income, then maybe. Flight instructors generally don't charge flight instructors for services. At least that is my experience. Of course there is usually little or no cost to provide the service and there is some compensation if there is free flight time involved. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |
