Not only that, but this board needs a good solid Catholic point of view. "A steaming pile of **** with a light dusting of grace" might be the best thing I have ever read on the internet.

We dont agree on a gawddamn thing but I really liked reading your stuff.

Place looks good and of course I'd like more pictures.

That's a wonderful deck design. I've often thought the car parking area made sense, if it can work with the rest of the building site, and yours does. Too often a deck isn't quite large enough, but this one surely will suit all your needs.

Nice front entry plans, too. Suits the house, but I wouldn't expect anything less from you. :)

We really need the two covered car parks since the garage was made for 1920s cars, like the Model A. Modern cars are 5 - 8 inches wider.

So this means we have shoot for about 21' deck width, with 10' wide parking spaces. The other consideration is that this composite decking is very expensive, and so I want to minimize waste. By running the deck laterally, with a "picture frame" edge and two intermediate cross bars, I can have all the lengths at 8' +/-, so the 16' stock can be cut in half to maximize efficiency. We're also adding a door from the hallway near the kitchen so we don't have to go through the living room, and this also provides a covered entrance to the basement/ laundry room.

Do you really need the column between the cars? I imagine that it would be easier to get in and out with the cars would be easier without that column. Or would it be too costly to leave it out?

Even if you didn't need the parking underneath, the deck size is great, and it fits the site. Too often people undersize the deck or patio, thinking they only need space for a tiny table. In reality, most people will want a table, chairs, room to move around those, potted plants, a grill, storage space for grilling supplies, another seating area, more potted plants, ...

Yeah, you have a good size.

If I span the 21 feet (6.5 meters) continuously, the deflection values move me away from pressure treated lumber into either glue-lams or steel, both significantly more costly.

As a compromise, I can easily span the 16' (just under 5 meters) with just one economical glue-lam beam, and frame everything else with 2x8s at 16" on center. I place the other column to the back of the car port, so that the column does not interfere with the car door swing. It also sets the floor joists in the right direction for the floor deck planks to be lateral and easily cut down from 16' stock for minimal waste.

I'm pretty sure this is the most economical way to frame this, given the decision to park cars beneath.

Yeah, MS and I want significant outdoor entertaining space -- a large dining table, lounge chairs, and a gas fire pit.

flickr works too - it's good if you have lots of photos, and want to organise (and find) them. You do have to sign up for an account, though. That might not be to everyone's cup of tea.
