Sue,

We will have an overnight in Vancouver in early August. Looking for your recommendation on what to see for the afternoon and where to dine that evening. A place with a great view of the city would be nice, although I have hear that, like ours here in Cincinnati, the revolving restaurant has mediocre food.

What should we not miss?

I'm not Sue, but Wreck Beach is always worth a "look" :)

Tourist websites often recommend Granville Island, but in my opinion it's mostly a combination of a very "touristy" market with overpriced meals.

We enjoyed Stanley park and the beaches in Vancouver a lot.

If you like whale watching, there are very good whale watching tours starting right in Vancouver. They take at least half a day though.

I know what you are thinking, Mik, but don't worry, there's also a gay section on that beach.

German humor. Almost as funny as the French.

I have never understood people who shed all their clothes at the beach, run around with their wangs, etc. hanging out then put on a hat.

It's about priorities? What must be on display versus what doesn't matter?

Maybe the large midsections provide enough shade already? :sombrero:

And in your defense, you did say you wanted a view for while you are dining.

This would not be a good view for dining.

Ummm...no. It would not. Bucolic and bulemic at once.

yeah, I'd skip that particular beach. I agree with Klaus about Granville Island, but wouldn't have thought Stanley Park was all that exciting, but perhaps I'm a bit jaded.....defintely the view from Prospect Point is fabulous - I think the restaurant there has folded/changed hands; so can't recommend eating there.

I love the waterfront by the trade and convention centre (where the cruise ships come in). You can people watch, check out cruise ships, watch sea planes come and go - and the beautiful view of the North Shore mountains. Close by in one direction is the old Gastown area; fun for a short walk to see the old architecture. Going the other direction you're close to Stanley Park (probably want to cab it).

As Klaus said, there are some great beach areas; English Bay is a must see, imo. A beautiful place to stroll and catch the views. I'll see if I can think of a restaurant with a view to the area. The lovely old Sylvia Hotel is a nice place for a drink.

Indeed, the revolving restaurant gets a 'meh' for the food. I'd pass.

Cin Cin on Robson is reliably good (not sure about the view though), pricey though.

Best view of the city is from the North Shore! Probably too much fuss for a one afternoon stay, but taking the 12 minute sea bus is fun and gets you to the North Vancouver waterfront...there's much revitilization going on there - including a place called Pier 7. I haven't eaten there, but it gets good reviews for it's seafood selection. And the view. Another pricey one though.

Let me think a bit, and i'll add more suggestions. See if I can think of some less expensive places (Vancouver is a pricey place)

The Keg Boathouse at English Bay is casual, nothing extraordinary food-wise, but fun, and with that great view.

Joe Fortes seafood and chop house, on Thurlow. If you want good seafood, go here; it's a Vancouver classic. Has a lovely rooftop patio area too. It's been around for a long time, and for good reason. Best fresh oyster selection in the city.

Vij's on Cambie. I haven't been to this new location (much bigger and fancier than the old), but it looks to have some great views. His food is outstanding, I'd say a must-do when in Vancouver...BUT a) that's only if you like Indian food, and b) he doesn't take reservations. Go early, and enjoy your wait in the lounge - they look after their customers nicely. Keep your cell phones tucked away. Share a dish of lamb popsicles.

Thanks, Sue! Made a reservation for the patio at Joe Forte's. Couldn't get in at the Boathouse.

Should be fun!

Oh, there's the fireworks festival next week - that could be why you couldn't get into the Boathouse; if you hit one of those days. Ringside view from there!

That would explain why a car rental is so hard to come by.
