in the document itemising the number of jews planned for the final solution in the protocols of the wannsee conference, france is listed with two numbers.

occupied, and non occupied (vichy) france

non occupied france had 700,000 listed which only makes sense if you count the jews of northern africa which were french colonies, morocco tunisia and algeria, so no doubt the nazis also planned to exterminate the sephardic communities of northern africa, but fortunately rommel was stopped by montgomery at El-Alamein and north africa was spared german rule.

now about 15% of israeli jewish population is of north african origin.
lots in france although over the past 3 -5 years there has been a huge influx of french originally north african jews to israel because of the demographics currently now in france. they are scared.

The article gives credit to the king for the respectful attitudes toward various faiths in his country. That's a great message.

There I was, an Orthodox Israeli Jew, at a 500-year-old synagogue in Marrakesh, distributing food parcels to Muslims for Ramadan, representing the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (The Fellowship) on behalf of millions of Christians in the U.S. and worldwide.
This reminds me ... I recently broke bread at a "Ramadan friendship dinner" with lots of Muslims. Do not worry, though, there was no, I repeat, no, terrorist incident. I came out safe, and rather well fed, I might add. I even saw women there who did not cover their heads, some even expose parts of their legs! Again, just in case any one gets worried reading that, as far as I can tell, all those women came out OK, and likely also well fed, too! :)

I think it would be tough to be a Muslim during this Ramadan if you lived in Norway or a very far north country. Almost no darkness at all.

They are French Jews who are leaving France in droves because of the sharp rise in anti Semitic incidents in France.

There are neighborhoods in Israeli cities that are inundated with French speakers.

Once u noticed a lot of Russian language and thought that it was indicative of changes in population. Now it's French.

I wonder about assimilation of new Jews into Israel...If they've been in Russia, France, the U.S., wherever...Is it approximately the same model as the American Melting Pot?

Any Muslim I know living here dreads Ramadan if it falls during May, June, July or the first half of August because of the long daylight hours.

My recollection of the solution in the middle east 35 years ago was to go to London for the month because nobody there cares what you do.

I wonder if that still works.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

A few weeks ago marked the 50th anniversary of the 6 Day War. Recalling the events leading up to that war and the shocking decision of the United Nations to remove peace keeping forces leaving Israel exposed, was a reminder to Jews that they were on their own in the 1940's and not much had changed in the 60's.

Good question. The issue of assimilating many diverse cultures has been the challenge and uniqness of a society built entirely on immigration, and its consequences are dealt with on a daily basis.

Lots of things to fix. But considering the demographic complexities (not to mention a number of wars) the society has managed to build a functioning succesful country in 70 years.

On my hospital floor we will have at any given moment staff and patients from Europe, North Africa, Russia, Ethiopia, with a smattering of English speakers (America Australia South Africa and the U.K. , not to mention Israeli arabs and various sub Saharan Africans.

Quite a volatile mix. But we manage.

I would think the military service requirement really helps with assimilation and homogenization. And this explains why the Haredi are perhaps the least assimilated part of the population despite their Ashkenazi origin.

I work with a Muslim guy who said that they get some kind of dispensation and can use a location with a more reasonable dusk to dawn time.

Makes sense. I know when I was in Indonesia, the laborers working in the fields got a special permission to drink and eat during the day. Otherwise, they would probably die of thirst.
