The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

HOLY CARP!!!

It's a window into what mainstream thought is. And yes, that is within the mainstream. It's only a very small extension of our ambivalence towards the flag. Flying the flag in front of one's house signals something bad in many quarters of this country. Is that shocking? Are they looking for 15 minutes of fame in their quarter? This guy won't get his 15 minutes nor was that why he said this. He said it to be a good person, as far as he's concerned. |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

And for the record I completely agree with those who find loyalty to their own country, simply for loyalty's sake, to be silly. |

I fly the flag every day. It's not a statement, just who we are. |

When I first came to work in the US, some joker put a big picture on the outside of my office door covered in American flags, entitled 'The American Way'. 9 months later I got promoted to manager, so I put a small sign up saying 'My Way or the Highway'. |

it is just human nature that people need to be part of something. That "something" can be a country, group, team, religion, etc. |

Taiwan_Girl, That's a good point. It also seems to be human nature that people need an enemy to focus upon to feel good about themselves, where that "something" can be a country, group, team, religion, Trump, Pelosi, neighbor, gophers, family member, media, etc. Maybe it's somehow more satisfying to be against something, rather than for something. Loyalty is lukewarm OK, but targeted criticism is more rewarding because it includes anger. Virtue signalling SJW's come to mind. Fight against the enemy, real or imagined, and hope for no solution because another enemy is then needed in order to enhance self-worth. Actually, the above is BS, but I'll post it anyway due to my loyalty to BS. |

I guess some people like being part of something, that's fine but I don't. But I do like the idea of having a country with employees dedicated to the idea of protecting me from other countries who would like to destroy this country. These are not imaginary countries, these are countries with leaders who have pledged to destroy us. |

Soooo ... you've met my mother, Rainman. Yes, you're correct on this stuff, Rainman. I don't fully understand why some people are this way, but I've seen it before, and experienced being the target. I have a couple of elderly relatives who have been acting like this for as long as I have known them. It makes them feel good about themselves. |
