He's still been a lousy chancellor.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Why do you say that? I would have sooner said he was your last decent one.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Although I hate the social democrat party, they had better chancellors. I liked Helmut Schmidt. And Gerhard Schröder was to a large part responsible for the good economy we have today.

Kohl was doing OK in the 1980s. But after the German reunion he became unbearable. His sloppy work was responsible for many of the messes we are in today, such as the Euro situation or Greece. And his contribution to the German reunion is usually overstated, IMO. At the end he was just an old man who couldn't let go, bankrupted his own party, and thought of himself as a demigod.

Well, I for one admire you for your balanced and subtle opinion on Trump ;)

Power transforms people. If people have power for a long time, usually that transformation is not positive. We've seen that with Kohl and now with Merkel.

I wish we had a term limit.

There's got to be a pun in there somewhere about Trump and coal, but I can't quite get hold of it . . .

Why would you take a dead guy over an alive guy?

Where would you put him?

In this case, it might be an improvement.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Kohl dealt with a hugely different world and country than today. He started with a vast arsenal of Eastern bloc tanks ready to roll across his borders at any time and ended with a reunified Germany. To compare him to today makes little sense.

by the Washington bureau chief for Die Welt

Quote:

Other nations in Europe were afraid of the overwhelming power a reunified Germany could muster within Europe, and did what they could to oppose reunification. But Mr. Kohl knew he could rely on the United States for support, and President George H. W. Bush duly threw his support behind the German leader. It wasn’t because Mr. Bush thought he owed Mr. Kohl something; it was because Mr. Kohl had earned Washington’s trust.

Some motivation behind Mr. Bush's message.
