The Bowery is the oldest thoroughfare on the island of Manhattan. When the Dutch settled there in 1654, they named the path Bouwerij — an old Dutch word for "farm" — because it connected cattle farms and estates on the outskirts to (what is today) Wall Street.
I *love* stuff like that (see the origin of "Skid Row.")

The area in which I spent my youth and adolescence was a suburban subdivision, but still there were totally undeveloped areas in which I would play.

One of the western suburbs of Chicago is "La Grange," which, I'm told, means "the farm."

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
Great piece. Like you, George, I grew up in a subdivision a few miles out of town, all surrounded by farms and land yet to be developed. Our developer ran out of money so very little more development took place until I was long past playing in the fields, ponds and creeks. It was great.

The green space made me think of the High Line, and then the Low Line. Is that coming along well? http://thelowline.org/
