This luna moth decided to spend his morning with me, which is pretty special since they only live for a week. I'm not sure if he's at the beginning, middle, or end of his week. I suspect it's the beginning. He seems to be trying out his new wings, drying them in the nice breeze.

He's a handsome fella, and big for a moth. he's about 4 to 4.5 inches across. It's definitely a fella, based on his antennae. No, he didn't mind me looking. :)

I can't believe I got a decent picture of him. He hasn't moved a lot, and he's letting the breeze move his wings at this point. It's as if he's still letting them dry and strengthen before flying off to find a mate. That makes me think his week has just begun.

Imagine if you only had a week to emerge, find a mate, and procreate. That's it. They don't even have a mouth or digestive system, because there's no time for that activity. Kind of a tight schedule there.

Wow.
He's a big fella! And isn't he handsome?

He's on the other end of the porch, but I can keep an eye on him from where I sit. This is my outdoor office, and it's fun to have a visitor of his caliber. :)

The Luna Moth was designed by German scientists after WWII.

These are such beautiful creatures!

The name fits.

I read that these luna moths are common in the eastern part of the US, but this is the first time I have ever seen one. I'm so glad I got the pictures to show hubby. Daughter got to see it on the porch this morning, but hubby was gone. By late this afternoon, when I was back home, it was gone. He must have finished drying those brand new wings in the breeze, and now he's off looking for a short term sweetheart.

Beautiful, Brenda. Thanks for sharing that.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Beautiful, Brenda. Thanks for sharing that.
Maybe these are common in the eastern part of the US, but in my 56 years, this is the first time I have ever seen one. Having it up close made it a real treat.

I've seen pictures, and artwork based on the luna moth, and now I know why artists would feature these in a design. The markings on the wings are so beautiful, so delicate and intricate. Mother nature has outdone herself with these gems.
