House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was shot in the hip and at least one other aide was also hit in the chest by a gunman with a rifle who opened fire at a baseball practice in Virginia Wednesday morning, Fox News confirmed.

Police tweeted they “believed” the gunman was in custody. Sen. Mike Lee told Fox News, however, the gunman was dead. He said a staffer used a belt as a tourniquet to stop Scalise’s bleeding.

The shots were reported on East Monroe Street in Del Ray, Alexandria police said on Twitter at 7:30 a.m. The location was near a YMCA.

Scalise, 51, is the House majority whip. He has represented Louisiana’s First Congressional District since 2008 and chairs the House Republican Study Committee. He is married with two children. Scalise’s district includes New Orleans.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., told Fox News he left just before the shooting. As he walked to his car, a man asked DeSantis if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing. About three minutes the shooting began, DeSantis said.

This happened less than five minutes from my house. Quite a scene (still is). Lots of helicopters and police cars.
I was going to take mom to lunch at her favorite restaurant today,...but it's just a couple blocks away from where this happened. It'll wait.

"Nobody would have survived without the Capitol Hill police," Paul said on CNN. "It would have been a massacre without them."

"We had nothing but baseball bats to fight back against a rifle with," Brooks said.

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake added that he saw a member of Scalise's security detail return fire on the gunman for what felt like 10 minutes, even though the police officer was wounded in the leg.

"50 (shots) would be an understatement, I'm quite sure," Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire.

Take away the Capitol Police and you have a field full of dead congressmen.

The man suspected of firing dozens of rounds into an Alexandria baseball field Wednesday morning has been identified by federal law enforcement officials as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill.

A Facebook page belonging to a person with the same name includes pictures of Democratic presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, and rhetoric against President Trump, including a post that reads: “Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.”

Sounds like it was a very brave Capital policeman. This could have been a lot worse.

Yes, from Trump's announcement.

Here's a treatment from NYT:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/14/us/steve-scalise-congress-shot-alexandria-virginia.html?_r=0

Reports are still pretty scrambled, it appears, but does it not seem that security was pretty thin while the game was going on? Everyone had to await DC police arrival?

Guess we'll learn more in the next days.

Good thing there was not a coordinated attack by jihadists that could shoot.

How in the world was there no security, except for the whip's security detail and a couple of DC cops (from what I've heard so far)?

What an opportunity to kill legislators, and no one thought about it beforehand? An open field. Perfect. Ducks in a shooting gallery.

One guy said (joking) "should have had Chris Christie there, would have blocked all the bullets
-- but then they couldn't have played baseball as all the balls would have gone into orbit around Christie while he munches on another bag of Doritos."

Since it has never happened before there isn't much to think about.

We are already way over the limit with personal security for government employees.

The talking heads keep repeating "Bernie Sanders supporter" and then his name.

No. He was a nut. Doesn't matter who he supported, obviously.

But it is interesting to conjecture how the reporting would change, if he were a "Hillary Clinton supporter" or "Democrat supporting" or "Muslim" or "Tea Party" etc. etc.

Part of the problem is that the talking heads are on 24/7, and spend their time having to say something, even if it is rambling on about whatever before the next commercial. That, is a contribution to the current Fake News, as the ramblings of "what I think" begin to be treated as fact via repetition.

He was a nut. Period.

Whoa!! Wait a sec! Maybe the shooter was actually a Russian spy, hired by Trump before the election, but due to a language barrier went to the wrong baseball practice? hmmmmm. I think I'm on to something.

:lol2: That's probably it. You should call WaPo. They'd slurp that up like candy.

Or what about this? He's a Trump lover who believes the Republicans are doing his hero dirt! Or no, wait, he's a Trump hater who hates Republicans because these ballplayers put Trump in office! Or no, wait, he's the actual guy who stopped the fan in the parking lot to ask which party was playing, and since he was armed at the time and didn't have the wits to learn this beforehand, either because he was a reeaallly poor planner or because he hated all politicians for FUBARing the country, he didn't care who he shot!

He had the gun already! See?

Or no, wait! He hated Scalise for not helping him with his veterans benefits, and the other casualties were cover.

Or wait, he was completely disassociated from reality and thought he was killing zombies.

Why would he do this? See Rainman's post! He was a nut! Now a dead nut.

ETA: And also, thank god, a lousy shot.

The thing that struck me when I looked on his FB page was a photo of a child - presumably his grand daughter. Poor kid.
