Desperate residents are building ropes from sheets in an attempt to escape from their windows as a huge inferno is engulfing a tower block in west London.

The 'horrendous' blaze has struck the 27-storey Grenfell Tower in Latimer Road, White City, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The fire has spread from the second floor to the roof of the towering block, with 200 firefighters struggling to bring it under control.

Desperate residents trapped high in the enormous tower were heard screaming for help as they built ropes from sheets in an attempt to reach the ground. One neighbour said he believed someone had jumped from the block.

The residential block holds 120 flats, with two of the residents being treated for illness from smoke inhalation.

Terrified residents in their pyjamas have been evacuated as police are pushing people away from the area for fear the block will collapse as debris has started to fall from the tower.

I've been watching coverage of this for the last couple of hours (bbc); have heard nothing of screaming, and sheet rope escape attempts. I sincerely hope their coverage is the accurate one.

So awful, I've been watching Utube for info. Can't tell where this is. They state "London" but it must be somewhere in the outskirts, as I don't see city buildings.

An Inferno. I so hope there was enough warning that people could escape.

Checking Fox cable, they do have it in the background split-screen, with occasional commentary on what they don't know.
CNN, nope, they are obsessed with trying to hang Trump via "analysis" by talking heads. Rinse and repeat all night long.

24 hour news. What a flipping joke.

I'll check BBC next. Not that it matters what I do or do not know. But, the visuals are so disturbing, I would feel some solace if I knew people escaped.

No, it is hitting the major cable networks -- just saw a report, CNN just reported that at least two people were treated for smoke inhalation.

That would be amazingly good news!!

According to reports, as many as 76 people could be missing.

It struck me that if the UK invested 1% of the money spent on watching terrorists on improving fire alarm and sprinkler systems, this probably wouldn't have happened.

Yeah, I know, stupid comparison. Still....

I live on the 15th floor of Grenfell Tower. I moved there two years ago.

At around 12.45am on Wednesday morning I was watching TV when I heard aggressive knocking at my door. I heard more activity and noise outside and shortly after I heard an alarm go off in the building. I saw smoke coming into the flat and that's when I realised there was a fire.

I rang the fire service and they told me to get out. They said: "Wrap a wet towel around yourself and get out of the block."

I was choking and couldn't breathe. I started to feel faint. I collapsed
But I opened the door and the smoke was so thick I couldn't. I tried to leave the flat three times and each time the smoke was too thick.

I started to panic. I began banging on the window shouting: "Help me, help me, I'm stuck!" I tried to open the window but I burnt my hand on the melted plastic.

I could see police outside and people just standing there. It felt like they were just watching me. Then I realised if I don't go I would die here.

I wrapped a wet jumper around myself and ran out of the door with just the clothes on my back and my phone. The smoke was black and it was so hot and I couldn't breathe but I kept going.

I could feel myself tripping over in the dark. I was tripping over bodies. On one of the floors I tripped badly and fell, as I looked up I saw the face of a dead man.

I can still picture him now.

As I got to the third or fourth floor I was choking and couldn't breathe. I started to feel faint. I collapsed and that's when I felt a firefighter grab me.

I went to hospital and was treated for smoke inhalation. I had so much poison in my lungs. I was crying and having flashbacks.

When I saw the first pictures, I was surprised to see the whole building engulfed in fire. This may be an explanation of how that happened:

That's incredible that a fire in one apartment could consume so much of the whole building.

The number and names of victims ... this will be a long time to wait for so many people who have loved ones there. So very sad for them.
