Last night, D2, D3, D4 and her fiancee joined us for dinner. After we finished eating the main course, the waiter asked if we would like after-dinner cocktails.

D4: "Glenlivet on the rocks, please."
Fiancee: "Laphroaig, neat."

Yeah, one of my greatest accomplishments is getting my youngest daughter to appreciate single-malt Scotch whiskey.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

The fiance should be ordering something a bit more modest.

1) He paid for it

2) Our choices were a) Dewars, b) J & B, c) Glenlivet, d) Laphroaig. Which would you pick?

Which would you pick?

That depends who is paying.

It's dark and thick, a viscous liquid which lumbers around the glass as I swirl it.

I get luxurious rum and raisin on the nose, a deep and rich aroma which disguises the fruitiness that's to come.

First sip: There’s a gentle sweetness, coupled with the taste of candied bitter oranges.

I roll it around my mouth some more, and it's robust and flavorsome.

Another sip: This time some dried apricots come through, a few juicy raisins, and a handful of childhood sweets.

I'm struck by how incredibly smooth it is.

I swallow, and the dram blindsides me again: the fruity taste gives way to a satisfying dry finish with notes of licorice and dark treacle.

My brain crackles as my tongue processes all of the complex tastes, while trying to absorb the heritage of the bottle.

There's a single measure in the glass, and after some rough mental arithmetic I realise I'm holding about £1,000-worth of whisky in my hands.

I don't know. There is something just plain wrong about that.

The liquor store price here for a shot of 25 year Glenlivet is about $26. That is plenty for me.

He still drops in on the Glenlivet folks, since a blended scotch is marketed under their name. What would interest y'all more, was his trip into the rooms which house the really good stuff...20-25 year old single malt and some even older. If I understood correctly, some of the best is not sold to the public.
