HOLY CARP!!!

Alex Honnold climbs up a really big cliff without ropes A bold claim. And a ridiculous one. But that's neat. I've been trying to keep up with what he's been doing, for the past few years, since I heard of him. Pretty compelling stuff, that free climbing. I'm looking forward to the NatGeo documentary of this latest feat. As far as ranking sports achievements, I prefer time tested sports with lots of competition. Stuff that lots of kids are exposed to from a young age. Then we can talk about historic achievements. The problem with ranking this, is that the sample size of people trying to do similar things is so small. And of course it could never be a real competitive sport, since the could-die-in-the-attempt factor is so high, and we can't have that in our competitive sports. |

It would not have been less impressive if he had a safety rope. I can't stand people who risk their lives for no good reason. |

I know what you mean, Klaus. It often encourages others to do the same, and then even Darwin winces. |

It's not only such behaviour encouraging others. I just think it's extremely selfish. This guy probably has parents who invested thousands of hours to raise him, who care for him, who would be devastated if he dies. Maybe he has a wife or even kids. Risking your life for no good reason is the same as giving the finger to everybody who cares for you. |

Agreed. All of that is part of what I was thinking, too, but you put it into words well said. It also makes me wonder how much of a grip on reality such a person really has. To me, it appears the person has a personality disorder, one that shouldn't be encouraged. |

I am sure he has aged his parents prematurely. My first piano teacher had a son who felt it was his right to ride a motorcycle without a helmet. Now he is a brain damaged paraplegic and has basically ruined everyone around him's life. No short term memory at all. Each time I came for seven years was meeting him for the first time. |

While I agree that one has an obligation to his parents and/or caretakers, quite a hefty one, I don't agree that one owes them his every moment of life. If he finds himself willy-nilly saddled with a passion the suppression of which makes his life not worth living, then he has an obligation to himself, too. And how much can his caretakers love him if they insist he live solely for their happiness? If the indulgence of this passion is life threatening and he has made kids, then his die is probably cast. Too late, pal, should've thought it through better. And speaking of life threatening. It's his life. Zen masters speak of the importance of embracing the possibility of death as the only way worth living. I'm trying to nail down in my memory the details of this one guy's experience . . . something about, he spent a weekend doing something very life threatening, it all could've gone south at any moment, and how it changed his whole perception of everything come Monday morning. Office watercooler bullsh!t ceased to have any meaning at all. It was a great story; I wish I could remember the source. Anyway, my two cents. |

The essential part of my sentence was "no good reason". A good reason is bigger than that person, i.e., it's not only about him or her. If somebody risks his life only to get some kind of kick out of it, well, then to me that person is an a-hole. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

I saw an interview many years ago done with a well-known mountain climber, although I cannot remember the man's name. One the main questions in the interview was why the man had quit climbing, although he was in amazing shape and only in his early thirties. His response? "I woke up one morning and started to think...You know, all my climbing buddies are dead". |

Michael Phelps to race shark In racing and jumping the shark at the same time, this will undoubtedly be the greatest sports achievement ever. |
