It would be nice to have the threat removed.

Up to a point diplomacy would probably be cheaper.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

The $64 question is whether the Russians and the Chinese have washed their hands of North Korea.

Me, either - at least not now.

I redd up a bit on George Friedman. I'm like, thank you for your input, Mr. Friedman, now sit down.

I read "America's Secret War" a while ago. Interesting take on the whole Mideast situation. Basically, he blames Iran for much of the disorder there.

I like and respect Friedman quite a lot. I just can't quite see them yet walking away.

Oh, I think the Chinese are close.

China, at its core, has historically been about business and making money. North Korea is bad for business. Very bad.

I could see the Chinese walking away from NK. I'd love to know what Trump talked about with them.

The Chinese must feel frustrated. A couple of months ago when the half brother of Kim Jong Un was murdered in an airport, he was the prime suspect. It was acknowledged the half brother had been living under the protection of China, some viewed Kim Jong Un's act as poke in the eye toward China.

If fighting breaks out in North Korea there will be a massive refuge migration into China which has long been dreaded by the Chinese government. China is committed and they know it is impossible to isolate themselves from the NK problem.

100 years ago the world decided to do away with kings and the concept of "divine providence". WWI, which ended with a terrible treaty, leading to WWII and we have been "at war" ever since in some form or another.

Let's rid the world of dictators once and for all. WWIII anyone?

I do not think that China is ready to walk away. As Tobster says above, the refugee problem would be massive and they also do not want a strong US ally on their border. They will do everything to stop that, so I see them preventing the fall of North Korea. What could happen is a internal replacement of the Kim family with someone (or group) who is picked by China.

For Russia, even though the border with DPRK is less than 20 Km, I think they will try and increase their support of DRPK if they see that relationship with China is slipping. In fact, they are already doing it. I believe that trade through Tyumen is increasing as DPRK looks to Russia more.

you never know, i think its possible that kim jong un actually wants to precipitate a fight.

i wonder how that will work out....

i like this line of friedmans.... [the US} will continue to "be involved in all sorts of miserable wars every five to 10 years. It's partly because no one else wants to do it and partly because we can afford to and partly because of long-term threats."
