For many (myself included), voting for Trump was unthinkable.

When an unthinkable candidate faces off against an unthinkable candidate something has to give.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

And the Dems keep shooting themselves in the foot. If they had the sense of a two-headed goat, they'd run a more centrist, fiscal conservative Democrat, with some experience in an executive office such as a governor.

A Bernie Sanders type candidate is not the future, unless they love being the minority party.

Jolly - very true statement.

What in the US stops an extra party from starting up and being successful? Is it just money?

No, the two major parties have also stacked things against them. You can't appear in the major debates without polling at least 10%, the whole process of getting your name on the ballot is nearly impossible, the two major parties get matching funds by getting $5000 in donations of under $250 in 20 states while third party candidates need to get 5% of the vote in the prior election to qualify...
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

More than that, though, is the structural issue of the voting system. First-past-the-post elections make third parties nearly impossible to get a foothold.

So who's going to be the opposition? You can't have a functioning democracy without an opposition.

There are two political ideologies currently fighting to take control of the democrat political machine, and they will continue to hide behind the name " democrat" - Socialists, and Facsists. More accurately, they are in the process of merging and becoming a third, even more vile ideology than the other two. But the democrat party is dead and will never exist again.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - but who's going to be the opposition to the Republicans? Roughly half the country don't want the GOP to be running it, who are they going to vote for? If the Democrats are all fascists, who are the people who don't like the GOP going to vote for, if we assume they're not fascist?

There are 3 basic groups of democrat voters - socialists, fascists, and "regular democrats". The socialists lined up behind Bernie. The fascists lined up behind Hillary. The "regular" democrats are now in the minority, and are divided into two groups: those who won't or can't think for themselves, and those who can. Those who can't mostly voted for Hillary, because they are the "I'm a democrat and I'll vote democrat no matter what", and the ones who can think voted for Trump.

So people who consider themselves democrats are at a crossroads.

But, so are republicans - people who consider themselves republicans need to make a choice between whether they are going to throw their support behind America, or the republican party and its gutless, clueless "party establishment".

We will never have more than two viable parties, so regardless of which party a person aligned himself to in the past, we're rapidly approaching the point where the choice isn't going to be between democrat or republican, but between good and evil.
