About 100 of the 3100 students graduating from Notre Dame walked out on Pence's graduation speech (which was pretty good, BTW) and held their own "graduation" outside the venue.

If that would have been my kid, after all the blood, sweat, tears and money it took to get him through college, I think I would have disowned him on the spot after a silly, mindless protest which amounts to nothing and will be remembered by no one except the family, who did not get to see their graduate walk.

I wouldn't have disowned him -- I'd figure by college-grad age he had earned the right to make his own mistakes decisions. But I'd have expressed my displeasure and maybe taken him to school on the best way to think things through and apply good judgment.

You assume that the kids who walked out (1) used their parents' money to get through college, (2) walked out without their financial sponsors' consent, (3) that their financial sponsors care one way or another. None of which of which has been demonstrated. That's before we even talk about what obligations the graduates may or may not owe their financial sponsors, if any. You're throwing a tantrum because a few kids, whose circumstances you do not know, walk out on an elected politicians whose party affiliation matches yours. Pretty tribal at its base, actually.

I watched one of them being interviewed on TV. That one at least, and the 4 little idiots with her, have never worked a day in their lives, so mommy and daddy most definitely paid their way through school. The reasons she gave to justify walking out showed her to be an ignorant, ideologically brainwashed twatwaffle (I like that word too) with barely enough sense to tie her own shoes. The other four just stood their grinning and bobbling their heads like trained seals.

In other words - a typical leftwing nutjob.

I would imagine her parents are just as stupid.

Anti-Trump activisim, all of it from Kimmel's monologue to protests like this, is the easiest and safest way to earn one's SJW badge that I have seen in my lifetime.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Yep, as usual, Catseye has some good words of wisdom. I agree this would have been the correct way to handle it.

I think his post was very astute. To get to the nuts and bolts of this, I highly doubt you would have even posted something like this if the walkout happened to our former vice president Biden. Because in your mind, he and his liberal ilk do not deserve the respect that someone like "hearnoevil, seenoevil, speaknoevl" Pence does.

Right?

No way.

I dunno. Tuition is just shy of $50,000 a year.

Maybe one of them came there with a quarter mil in his pocket...

Right?
Wrong.

My dad would have kicked my butt before I would have gotten halfway down the aisle and I would have done the same to my kids.

Sometimes, you sit down, shut up and respect the occasion. OTOH, some people have no manners and some are just trash, no matter how much money their daddy may have.

Seriously? That's all you would do?

No voicing your thoughts? No questioning of motives? Nothing but an eye roll?

If my kid did that, I would have plenty to say.

#1. "If you knew you were going to do this, why didn't you tell us and save us the hassle of having to come to all the way to South Bend to see nothing?!?"

Not sure what I'd do, if my son or daughter acted like a petulant child and walked out before hearing what was said.

Maybe the next time we had a discussion, I would turn and walk away.

When my kid asked, "Dad, why do you just walk away before listening to me, you didn't even give me a chance!"

My response would be, "You set the example, so I'm just using your method of eliminating discourse. How do you like it?"

(actually, that probably would have saved me some money, come to think of it)

Yes, that's a problem.

If Hillary Clinton was talking at the graduation then the graduate and I would just make plans for Disney World instead.

Part of being an adult is respecting those with whom you disagree.

Walking out, as Rainman commented, negates that.

This wasn't a demonstration, it was a tantrum, reflecting the intellectual maturity of those who disagree.

But, that's OK.

In two weeks, these snowflakes will have to deal with the harsh realities of the real world, where things are "unfair" and "safe spaces" don't exist.

Enjoy.

Sorry, no.

Respect is earned. You don't earn it, you don't get it. I taught my kids that and it stuck.

Proud of them.

Sorry, no.

How can respect be earned when you won't even listen? Remember the whole "epistemic closure" comments a few years ago?

Here it is.

It's the equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and yelling "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!"

It's a tantrum. Don't dignify it.

The love of your child then is not only conditional, but conditional upon their opinions of Mike Pence at a graduation ceremony?
I cite irreconcilable differences.
