Here's why a chunk of the internet just got messed up

A large swath of the internet went down on Tuesday when Amazon’s (AMZN) cloud-based Simple Storage Service, or S3, went offline. Amazon’s service provides website and image hosting and storage capabilities for a variety of companies including Imgur, Dropbox, Slack, Snapchat’s Bitmoji, parts of Amazon itself and a slew of others.

Amazon’s Web Service (AWS) online dashboard indicates that the problem is affecting the company’s East Coast operations.

“We are continuing to work to remediate the availability issues for Amazon S3 in US-EAST-1,” read a statement on the site. “AMS services and customer applications depending on S3 will continue to experience high error rates as we are actively working to remediate the errors in S3.”

Update: According to an AWS spokesperson Amazon believes it knows the cause of the current outage. “We continue to experience high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1, which is impacting various AWS services. We are working hard at repairing S3, believe we understand root cause, and are working on implementing what we believe will remediate the issue.”

This isn’t the first time a problem with Amazon’s Web Services has taken down part of the internet. Just last year, a large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack impacted Amazon Web Services, causing problems across the web.

Amazon Web Services is a force to be reckoned with in the cloud services industry. In Q4 2016, the segment saw 46% growth with revenue of $3.5 billion.

We’ll update this piece as we learn more about the current outage.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
