This is the 'Punt Gun,' which could kill 50 ducks in one shot. It was so bad, they outlawed it IN THE 1860's.

Geaux Tigers!
When I was but a wee lad, folks down here still market hunted. The most effective method I ever saw was a home-made cannon. About a ten foot piece of 3" Schedule 80, wrapped in piano wire, loaded from the muzzle. It was tied down to the boat and you had to point the boat to point the gun.

Load with black powder, wadding, bent nails and pieces of old cast iron stoves, etc and another piece of wadding, creating a homemade canister round. You fire that off at night, as the ducks are rafted up together on the lake and then go scoop them up by the fishnet full.
