If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
Interesting article. Not quite sure what to make of it. I know we did let our daughter do sleepovers from time to time, but only with families we knew very well. http://www.challies.com/articles/why-my-family-doesnt-do-sleepovers |

I'm not sure these things are more common, or that we just hear about them more. |

Some parents look to any reason in the world to exert complete control over their kids. Then their kids grow to rebel or to become triggered snowflakes (not able to handle anything, take risks, thrive with real life outside their family bubbles) Whatever happened to: "Hey, if you want-need to come home, just give us a call..."? |

In the history of the world, children have never been safer than they are now. From the time they are toddlers safety messages have been drilled into them: Hold my hand. Buckle up. Smoking is bad. Yell "You're not my father" if someone tries to swipe you. There's good touching and bad touching. Text me if you want to come home. Yada, yada... And I have NEVER felt the need to explain why my kids couldn't go somewhere. I wonder if Mr. Challies home schools his kids. |

I suspect that the subtext here is that a reduction in Christianity is leading to more child abuse and less trustworthy parents. My daughter isn't allowed to say somewhere overnight unless we know the parents reasonably well, but anything more is getting a bit paranoid. |

I disagree completely. When I was a kid, we could go anywhere we wanted, be gone for hours, most of the time our parents didn't have a clue where we were and didn't worry about it because they were confident that no one would bother us. People left their houses unlocked even if they were gone on a trip. The house I grew up in didn't even have a lock. We had guns, bows and arrows, yet we didn't shoot each other. The thought never crossed our minds to do that. We'd get into fist fights, beat the sh!t out of each other, then get up and go swimming in the lake or something, best buddies again. The worst thing one kid would hand another and say "do this" was some tobacco leaves he'd taken from the barn. There was no concern about pedophiles, because there weren't any to be concerned about. Today, kids aren't safe outside their own front yard. Pedophiles are so common they have to be listed on a registry so you'll know which houses to stay away from. Drugs are everywhere, even in their parents' medicine cabinet. You have to keep your doors locked even when you're home. That's just a few things that I can think of. There's plenty more. A kid growing up when I did was safe just about anywhere he went. Today a kid isn't even safe in his own bedroom. |

Try looking at it from a bit bigger standpoint, instead of just your own situation. I suspect you're correct about the subtext - but I also agree with that subtext. Paranoia has nothing to do with it. |

James Dobson is a questionable Christian at best. It seems another attempt by Focus on the Family to work America into a "us and them" mentality. |

what social or genetic forces could possibly be responsible for more pedophiles now than then? |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

I disagree with the article 100%. The mindset behind it represents a lot of what's wrong with our society. The kind of overprotection of children that seems to become more and more common in the US is itself a Form of child abuse. |

I work with prisoners and thus with pedophiles to an extent. They are who they are. They are often smart conversational and extremely clever. Most are very nice people if you don't discuss why they are in prison. And then it all about, how nobody really understand how that six year old is a sexual devil in disguise. And there's no going past that. Some will accept that they and the world are on different planes of reality and not act on the little girl's (or boy's) "provocations". Some will act and be in prison forever reliving that incident to the end of their lives in their heads. Much to their satisfaction. |

I have a lot of time for Christians. James Dobson, not so much. Mrs. D'Oh subscribed to his newsletter for a while. We were not impressed, hence my comment. He's been called the successor to Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson. Not really my cup of tea, old chap. |

James Dobson isn't quite a "real" Christian. So save you comments about Christians. Edited by TomK, Oct 29 2016, 03:55 PM.

Yes Tom, James Dobson is most definitely a "real" Christian. But you're not, or you wouldn't be trashing Dobson. |

I don't know whether Dobson is a real Christian or not, however I wasn't particularly taken with his opinions. This particular opinion, that sleepovers should be banned, seems foolish to me. The implication that every parent is a potential child abuser is just as hysterical and wrong as the morons on the left who think that every male is a potential rapist and every policeman a potential killer of black people. |

I agree that making a blanket statement that all sleepovers should be banned is a little too extreme. But that doesn't mean Dobson isn't a real Christian, nor does it give Tom the right to pass judgment on the man. It's a fairly stupid comment to be honest. |
