Queen’s “We Will Rock You” is one of the most instantly-identifiable stadium anthems of all time.

But the iconic U.K. band also recorded a rapid-fire version in 1977 for DJ John Peel that wholly abandons the track’s two-stomp-clap beat. It’s a clear counter to the emergence of punk, and it’ll blow your hair back.

While the fast version was a live staple for years, it was never officially released. It’s finally coming out Nov. 4 as a part of a 24-song set, Queen on Air, that pulls together the band’s various BBC sessions. the six-disc deluxe edition will also feature interviews, like this 1982 conversation between guitarist Brian May and John Tobler:

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Pretty rough, more like their first album that no one has ever heard. We had it as a cutout bin special long before they hit big.

They opened their shows with this version of the song for years. I liked it. They also play the original version late in the show when they do We are the Champions.

If you're referring to the album that preceded their album with Killer Queen I seem to recall it being pretty popular here. I think I still have a copy of it in the garage.

Red cover. I really liked it. Bit less dramatic.

Saw them on the Queen II tour in a nice theater - excellent show.

The radio DJ John Peel used to do this a lot - bands would come in and record sessions, there's an absolute ton of them. He was one of the big supporters of the early punk movement when I was a kid in the 70's, and was pretty much the only Radio 1 show anybody would admit to listening to, since he played so much non-commercial stuff. I still remember hearing his theme tune at 10pm every night. HE was by far the coolest guy on the radio for a good 20 years. Sadly, he died in 2004,

Huh, I was expecting them to speed-up/compress he rhythm for the "we will, we will rock you" phrase, but they did not.
