It is out - the 400 richest Americans.

The interesting statistic I heard is that 2/3 of this list are self made. No significant inheritance. Rather trounces the notion that there is little opportunity and tyat all the money is going to the already wealthy.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

How do you figure?
I cite irreconcilable differences.

2/3 are self made billionaires, Aqua. That means they started with pretty much nothing and became Masters of the Universe.

That doesn't mean America is a meritocracy for so many reasons.

(1) We're talking about the absolute richest people. That 2/3 of the richest 400 people in America worked at it doesn't mean that everyone who works at it just as hard can do the same. There just isn't that much money out there. Not everyone can be a billionaire, even if they work hard, they're smart and they try at it.

(2) From the same article:

Quote:

It is a known fact that the wealthiest have amassed a greater proportion of the nation’s output than the rest

(3) The article says absolutely nothing about poor people who are trying to get into middle class or even upper class status. Again, it's only the richest 400. You can't extrapolate from that any conclusions about the whole of the nation's poor.

What this article says—the only thing it says—is that among the nation's richest 400 people, there's a greater proportion of self-made fortunes than there were in 1984. That's it. It says nothing about the actual possibilities that exist for people who are poor and want to climb the ladder.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Not everyone can be a billionaire

Sure they can.

But not all at the same time.

And in general only those who earn it.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
